  1. I don't shave, I epilate. I have a little gizmo that pulls it out by the root. Kinda like waxing, only less so. It doesn't hurt anymore than waxing and yes, I do it everywhere. HTH
  2. Legally, if you are paying on the bill they can't turn it over to collections. Even if you are only paying a small amount at a time. I would call in advance and see if you could work out a payment schedule. That way they won't be calling you on the phone looking for payment. If you don't have insurance, next time it is best to try and talk to someone in advance about a private pay price. Different people pay different prices and private pay is the highest. You need to negotiate that in advance though. I mean, it is hard to ask for the Blue Cross price after you have seen the doc, kwim? Of course, cardiologists are specialists and therefore their rates are higher than a general practictioner. Those just in his office visits are definitley expensive. You should see what an orthopedist charges for an office visit. If they cast the kid it counts as a "surgery". The last statment showed that at about $2500 per visit. Ouch!!
  3. I use my own mosturizer, BM foundation, blush, sometimes the warmth, and the eye shadows. I love the eye shadows!! I tried to use the eyeliner, but I like my own better. I am one of those that put it directly on the bottom lid. I use my own mascara too. I used the BM for a while, but it bothered my eyes and smudged and ran even though it was the waterproof. I use the mineral veil if it will be a long day.
  4. We do veggies and hummus, lettuce wraps, rice crackers and peanut butter, steamed or roasted vegetables, baked potatoes, lunch to us is usually not a sandwich. Try this site. She is an inspiration and talks about how hard it can be and some things that will help. http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/
  5. I get mine from Publix. My local hardware store was also willing to order washing soda and Fels for me. I pay .99 for the Fels and 2.32 for the washing soda ( a whole box will last a long, long time). I had already been using Borax in my washer, I got that at Wal-Mart. I have a front lover and use the cold water setting and my clothes are much cleaner than when I used Gain. Good Luck.
  6. I say let him go. He likes his friend and think of it as a learning experience that there are lots and lots of jerks out there. My 16 yo is kind of like your son. It took me a while to realize that she can and does stand up for herself. A few years ago there were a bunch (3 or 4) who were ganging up on another girl on the playground and she even stood up for her. My heart almost burst with joy when I found out. Give your son to surprise you and make you proud. Just let him know that whenever he is ready or has had enough that you will be right over to get him. Teenage years are the hardest, but these leads to even higher highs when they do something to make you proud of them. Good Luck. Chrystal
  7. Talk with your doc. He can prescribe something that can help and won't cross the placenta. DON'T take herbal supplements like St. John's Wort because a lot of them can cause bleeding problems. I did have depression at the end of my last pregnancy and it did not get better, only worse, after the baby was born. You also could try exercising everyday and getting into the sunshine at least 10 minutes a day. They both help to increase the "good feeling" hormones that your body makes on it's own. There is no shame in depression. We don't choose depression, it is a medical condition caused by a chemical deficiency and if you don't get help it is a downward spiral that feeds on itself. You know, you're depressed so you fell bad, you feel bad which leds mor a deeper depression, and so on and so on. HTH
  8. We use Spelling Workout for our 1st grader (from how you describe your son's abilities, sounds like your might need to start with the second book in the series.) My high school junior reads voraciously for "assignments." She has one special notebook in which to write down new of unfamiliar words in the book. Then she has to define, categorize, and of course spell them. She took a placement test when she was 11 to apply to a private school and scored post college in all areas. She was bored at the school and asked to come back home and now I wish I had never enrolled her in private school because I am having to work really hard to get us back where she was 4 years ago regarding work ethic and not procrastinating with her assignments.
  9. Cranberry Bread 2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1 ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt ¼ cup butter or margarine 1 egg beaten 1 tsp orange zest (I left this out) ¾ cup orange juice 2 cups dried cranberries (or 3 cups fresh or frozen chopped) Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda into a large bowl. Cut in butter until crumbly. Add egg, orange juice, and zest all at once. Stir just until mixed. DO NOT OVERMIX. Fold in cranberries. Spoon mixture into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Remove and cool on wire rack. Adapted from “Cranberry Thanksgiving†by Wende and Harry Devlin.
  10. I have super sensitive skin and couldn't use the Oil of Olay products at all (the perfume I think). Anyway, now I use Eucerin Daily Facial Mosturizer. It has an SPF of 30 and is oil free so that helps. I break out from a lot of things, but this one has been going well for about a year now for me. I also use the Eucerin Daily for the body with sunscreen during the summer and without during the winter. I also had trouble finding a mosturizer for my body for the same reasons. HTH
  11. I have a 16 almost 17 yo dd and I still wouldn't do that. I have taken her to the mall and stayed there while she and her friends shop by themselves, but she always has her phone. To be honest, my parents never dropped me and left at the mall. At the skating rink, yes, but not anywhere that crowded.
  12. It is my understanding that sending money is free, it is only the seller who is charged a fee.
  13. It is all dependent upon what the scores are for your state. Only the top 1% qualify as semi-finalists. The restriction is that you have to be in your junior year and graduating in 2 years. If you take it earlier and score well, you are not entered into the scholarship competition. HTH
  14. This is actually based on the number of toilets and sinks in the house, not the number of people. If you don't flush paper, it shouldn't be a problem at all.
  15. First question, did they get your permission to attach to your fence? If not they have broken the law by doing so. I would report this first. At least then the dog wouldn't be capable of jumping at you or coming over or under the fence. Send a letter or better yet get an attorney to send a letter to the landlord and the tenant stating that they are in violation of the law by attaching to your fence and that you will seek damages. Next, I wouldn't steal the dog and take it away. Then you are guilty of a felony. If the dog is truly scaring you, call the police.
  16. Squash (any kind you want), about 2 cups cooked with chopped onion until cooked through and soft 2 eggs to bind (if you wanted you could also add some boiled chopped egg) 1 can cream of something (anything you want) and 1/2 can milk or 1 Tbsp butter melted, with 1 Tbsp All Purpose flour mixed in until no lumps (looking for a rouxe here) and add 1 cup milk and whisk until lightly boiling and beginning to thicken. 1 cup grated cheese Mix everything together and top with 1 sleeve Ritz crackers dotted with butter. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes until bubbling. Serve warm. Praline topping is just brown sugar, butter and pecans mixed together and baked on top of the sweet potatoes that have mashed with butter and milk. Some people add some eggs to the potato mixture, but I think it makes it too heavy.
  17. Hi everyone. My name is Chrystal. My husband and I are homeschooling 2 of our children, ages 16 and 6 at home. Our 16 yo is returning home after 4 years in a small private school. Our 6 yo came home last year after 1/2 a year in the same private school's Kindergarten program. We are using The Well Trained Mind as a jumping off place for our homeschool adventure. I have always been a believer in life-long learning and am thoroughly enjoying learning along with my girls. I do teach nursing part-time at a college in our area when they need extra help. I am happy to have this board to come to with questions and concerns and hope to contribute when and how I can.
  18. We're a little north of Montgomery in Wetumpka. We are homeschooling a first grader and an 11th grader.
  19. I do super simple 1 bag of baby spinach washed 1 bunch of scallions chopped sliced mushroom (if you like them) chopped boiled egg (if you like them) 6 pieces of bacon sliced into pieces Vineagar, salt, a little sugar. Cook the bacon in a measuring cup in the microwave until done and crispy. Remove the bacon and chop, but save the drippings. Combine all the salad ingredients in a bowl. To the reserved bacon drippings add vinegar (twice as much vinegar as drippings) salt to taste (usually 1/2 tsp or so) and sugar to taste (usually 1 tsp or so). Stir everything up and then pop in the microwave for 30 seconds or so. Stir again making sure to get the bits on the side of the cup. Pour over the salad and toss. Add the bacon to the top and serve. My kids love this and my father asks for it all the time.
  20. Sounds like what we had last week and hubby tested positive for the flu. There is so much H1N1 in our area they don't even test for it specifically anymore. Nurse's advice: Lots of fluids, Tylenol for fever, No aspirin at all (there is a risk for Reye's Syndrome), rest, rest, rest. And stay home at least a week or until all symptoms are gone. If any trouble breathing at all go directly to the doctor or ER. Don't wait or hesitate. The biggest risk with the flu in the little ones has been secondary pneumonia. Nothing to mess around with. Make sure you wash your hands and sanitize the areas they have been in. It is also a good idea to restrict them to a certain area of the house. Hubby pretty much stayed in our room and only 1 of the 3 kids got the flu and I was safe too. When the little one started running the fever and started having other symptoms she just crawled in the bed next to him and they watched cartoons all day. She was in heaven. Hope your guys feel better soon.
