  1. new khaki shorts. And dried them. Now, he has blue streaks on his shorts. I've tried oxyclean but it doesn't seem to be removing the dye. Can I safely use Rit dye remover on the shorts without removing the original color? I can't believe I threw those in together!:blushing: Sometimes I wonder where my brain is!
  2. Count me in among the embarrassed! I had no idea! I wonder if anyone I've said it aloud to knows this because NO one has pronounced it like "apple low gia" or corrected me!! It will take me awhile to reprogram my brain!
  3. Is it just the readers that is the problem? If so, I'd just pick a few that interest him and go with that. My daughter loves to read but she wasn't crazy about the core 6 readers. So, this year, I didn't order any. I still love, love the read-alouds and history books and wanted to stick with that. I also love having the Bible schedule. But for books that my kids read independently, I've been going to the library and letting them pick out books that interest them.
  4. I think that's great! I've considered it for a while now, but haven't taken the plunge yet. I'm such a perfectionist that I'm afraid I'd have my house spotless before they ever got here! So, will you be leaving the house while they clean? I've wondered about that. I have four children, so it seems weird to have five folks here while they clean, but I wouldn't want to leave either.
  5. I have a mild psoriasis so I use it as a moisturizer. We also use it for massages (I haven't found a better massage oil!!). I haven't had any issues with my sheets staining. I have also heard it was the best "personal" lube (as someone else has mentioned)!
  6. The biggest complaint I have is that I have way too many shoes to fill! Wife, mom, teacher, cook, maid, part-time artist, and then I also feel pressure to serve at church or within our homeschool group. It can be very overwhelming. I have piles of pictures I would love sorted into scrapbooks and such, but there's just not a lot of free time for myself when school is in session. When school is out, I'm doing catch up work. I really, really miss my free time. Another thing is the expense of curriculum. It's definitely not cheap to homeschool. Well, I guess there are money saving ways, but to get the programs I want can be expensive. And lastly, I hate grading my kids independent work! That can consume the most of my time! But if I let it slide, I feel that they get too lax in their work.
  7. Now Kysha, I've met you and I do not think you are boring!!!! :tongue_smilie: I think you are funny, friendly, and you laugh easily! You're very easy to be around! For me, I do think I'm the pretty much the same on here as in person. I try to be encouraging, I wouldn't want to hurt some one's feelings, and I avoid conflicts like the plague. I'm shy in big groups of people and even here, I pick and choose when I want to speak! Only someone pretty close to me would see my dry sense of humor. I can be very sarcastic, but would never do so on here because I wouldn't want it misunderstood.
  8. My top reasons: 1) I saw first hand our local public schools when I was doing my student teaching while earning my teaching degree. I was pregnant with my first and my heart sank as I thought about my own child in that school. It just wasn't good enough.....in many ways. Mississippi schools are ranked....what.....48th or 49th in the nation?! It still baffles me to see bumper stickers around town saying "We're proud of our public schools"! 2) We couldn't afford private school. 3) I had horrible public school experiences as a child and did not recieve a decent education until college. 4) I wanted to be with my child. I couldn't stomach the idea of sending my baby off to school. I also have issues with any one telling me what to do with my child. I don't trust that every adult around my child has my child's best interest at heart......in fact, very few do in my opinion. 5) I wanted to be able to teach my children about God and our faith. 6) I wanted my children to get a great education. It thrills me that my kids learn Latin! I didn't even know what Latin was until high school or later! I also love that they learn history in a chronological way. That just makes sense to me! When I was in school, reading was a chore. I had stacks of Cliff notes so I wouldn't have to actually read the book. I love that my kids adore reading and being read to! My youngest daughter has begged me all weekend to do a science lesson......she's dying to add to her ocean box! I'm so thankful my kids are learning and love it! 7) I want to protect my children from certain peer influences. I'd like my children to stay children. I also don't want the school system deciding what they teach my children about sex or other controversial issues. 8) I feel more at peace having my kids with me each day and being the one that protects them. Thanks for the great thread! It's a nice reminder to myself of why I'm doing what I'm doing!
  9. Last year, my daughter was in 7th grade and used Teaching Textbooks pre-algebra. She loved it!
  10. [quote name=Jill' date=' OK;437698 What I meant was that I at least want to know that it's working, when they do the experiments, and that they're getting what they need out of it, you know? Not that I have to stand there and watch, but...I just want this level of experimenting to be a little more...focused. ::Sigh:: I completely understand this! I know my daughter can and will work independently, but I have to be aware of how she's progressing. I tend to let too much time pass before I check on her work and this year, I'd like to have a better handle on that. It's just not as easy to grab my teacher book and check the answers now that she's in 8th grade! That part is much more time consuming now as I try to wade through her answers.
  11. I understand! I'm actually relieved to have another week while I wait on my schedule and supplies to arrive. That book has been shoved aside for now! Maybe when I'm not so overwhelmed with the other new curriculum for this year, I'll have a better attitude when I take another look at it.:001_smile:
  12. I have a boxer (he's 1)......love him to pieces. Anyway, the first thing I thought of was bladder infection as well. My sister-in-law's bulldog started peeing all over the house and that was her problem. My sister-in-law herself also got a bladder infection is on her 2nd round to try and clear it up. So, I'm guessing that could happen with your dog as well. Good luck!
  13. I can get on my soapbox over: -People with a stomach virus going to church or other places that exposes people! -People who walk right out of a public bathroom without washing their hands.....yuck! -rude and/or ignorant drivers -Neighbors that let their dogs bark non-stop -In-laws who say crap about you to your kids (behind your back).
  14. I usually buy the cores too, but this year decided to "save money" by picking and choosing a bit more. That's how I ended up not getting something I really needed and having to pay shipping on a small order. I'll go back to buying the whole kit and caboodle next year!
  15. Susie.....I completely understand! It's so easy to type one thing and mean another on these message boards. I've appreciated all the feedback as sometimes it's a little reality check for me.:) :grouphug:
  16. Ohhhh....I was only looking at the 150 supply kit. I didn't know that there would be two supply kits. Thanks for the clarification. This will be the 2nd time I've had to order something from Sonlight since my initial big order with free shipping. I detest paying for shipping because I've forgotten something again! Oh well.:001_rolleyes: I know the supply list and especially the schedule will help. It will also give me time to adjust to our other new programs before diving into this science. Thanks ProudMama for the link. I'll check it out before placing my Sonlight order. It's always a good thing to have options!:001_smile:
  17. I think I'm definitely lamenting for me, but do have concerns for dd. She did work through General science last year. We had the cd version and she didn't care for it much. I felt like I had a little too much responsibility with other subjects, other children, my own art business, running my home, etc., so I neglected to check her work often. I just don't feel she puts as much effort into it when it's not checked more regularly. She requested the textbook this year, which I ordered. I guess part of it for me is that she is growing up, texts are more advanced, more work, less fun, etc. "I" need to get over it. It just seems daunting. Perhaps I have "beginning of the year blues"!:001_huh: I was much too much enjoying our free time this summer! Colleen....I think I will order both of those from Sonlight. I think that would help. But I see that in the very first experiment that we need two pieces of insulated copper wire, which is not listed in the Sonlight kit. I wonder why? I'm just wishing for easy so that this actually gets done.... I know how this goes.....she comes to me needing something to do the experiment. I tell her OK, but forget. Days go by. I inquire if she is doing her science and she reminds me that we need such and such. ANYWAY, here's hoping for a better year. Thanks again for your input!
  18. I love Sonlight's regular schedule for our read-alouds and history. I didn't realize they had this schedule as well. So did you really find it that useful? I ordered that kit last year when she did general science. I should have ordered it again. I just didn't feel that we got around to the experiments enough to warrant spending the money, but I'm quickly realizing that if we are going to even attempt to do this right, that I need to buy it. Maybe when I'm not as overwhelmed (with so much new stuff this year), I'll be able to get my head around this in a more positive light. Thank you both for your input.
  19. throwing in the towel before ever getting started. It's for my 8th grade daughter. It looks overwhelming to me and the experiments seem to require items I do not have and time I don't have either. I hate this part of science....truly hate it. I know it's the wrong attitude to have, but as I stare at my pile of books and curriculum that need my attention and planning for my four children (8th grade down to preschool), this science book just seems.....uggg. Tell me how you all made the most of this book. I'm just afraid that if I feel like this now, that this book will be abandoned on my shelf or half-done by my daughter on her own. I have Apologia Zoology 2 I will also be teaching to my younger ones.
  20. LOL!! :iagree: Except that I haven't noticed the thing with Bobby Flay! I'll be watching for that! I always thought that about Giada too, but my brother and his brother-in-law thinks she's hot!
  21. I've had concern about getting in that same situation. I've had folks even from this board say they will pay me the next day and....well.....I never heard from them again. So, if a few days go by and no email, it goes to the first serious person! For all I know, the first person changed their mind and I'm trying to make some cash. I do take the time to email first person back, but after that, I'm free and clear. So, I wouldn't think another thing about it!
  22. My dd broke her humerus bone when she was 10. We didn't think it was broken because she had not swelling....nothing visible. But she had a lot of pain when she tried to raise her arm. She had to wear a sling as well. I'm thinking it was around 6 weeks. The good thing about them is that you can take them off to shower. It really wasn't too terrible. But I hope your son doesn't have a break! Best of luck!!
