I received an email today with more info and links for SF. Here is the demo for homeschool. I still don't know much about SF until we get our books & online access in August. For now I am using the free samples here. Dd7 is working through these lessons today on plants and then she'll be dissecting and labeling plants/flowers. We're using Plant Parts also as a reference. ETA: Here is a blog post with pics of our flower dissection project.

This was our last 'official' week of the school year. I added a few blog posts here. Thankful to God for a fantastic year!

Quickest way to teach divison?
Beth in SW WA replied to FairProspects's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
The computer-aspect of TT made it gentle, fun and non-threatening. Dd9 learned long div in early grade 2 in one sitting via TT4. Dd7 learned long div in late grade 2 via TT4. It was painless. I taught the algorithm first -- not the conceptual. That came later. They were both anxious to learn it and move on. It is coming alive even more for dd9 since she is dividing polys now. She can 'see' the point. Wish I could help more! For all the hullabaloo re TT, it served us well for monotonous learning of boring material. -
This blog post seems appropriate to share here in a thread re asynchrony. I found Abi 'teaching' her doll algebra yesterday. Never a dull moment around here. Thanks for letting me share. :)

Engineering Is Elementary
Beth in SW WA replied to Beth in SW WA's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
We are reading through the EiE collection, an early birthday present for dd7. I included a video of their reaction. They are fantastic little books. Dd7 wants to do the 'frog' book first (bio eng). For the summer, we'll do simple lessons with a few of the books. The educator resources page has some great ideas that we can use even though I don't have the TMs for the books. -

Best math for a mathy non-reader?
Beth in SW WA replied to KirstenH's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
Education Unboxed lessons may work for you. -
Yes. He wanted a dry run to get familiar with cc. He knows he's not disciplined enough to self study. He wants to go to campus with a prof teaching it. He used his aops pre-calc book to help him in his college trig class. He said the problems are so much better than his college text. He will use his aops calc book also so he will learn it from different angles. He needs the accountability of an actual class. Thanks, R!

I may have spoke to soon. Ds wanted to take care of this on his own without our help so we took the hands-off approach. After staying awake until 3:30 to study for his college trig final, he tried to register this morning for Calc 1 for summer. He forgot to make an appointment with his math advisor at the cc to get an approval code so he could register for the class. Oops. The helicopter mom in me is so frustrated. How could he have missed that important bit of information? Oh, well. He might be stuck with the evening session of calc 1. He'll be in class instead of out wakeboarding on the river with us. I wanted to rant & rave but I attempted the love & logic line, "Bummer that you can't register. What's your solution to the problem?" Thanks for letting me vent. This college transition will kill me or make me stronger. :tongue_smilie: Any advice from BTDTs? :bigear:

Decent college? -
Both CR & Steve Demme were trained by Jerry Mortenson so they have a lot of cross-over. CR takes it to the next level. Here are pics of dd9 doing one of CR's basic adv alg videos using the blocks. He also requires his students to draw models of the polys. Dd9 enjoys this immensely. She is just getting started. :)

Advice needed about studying Mandarin

BetterChinese put this on FB today. They that looks amazing. -
Great question. I stumbled on his website a few months ago and started on the videos which dealt with factoring polynomials since dd9 was learning this in her other alg lessons. CR's sons were 4 & 6 in the videos so I knew my girls would enjoy it. Here is the . Needless to say I was hooked. You can start at his website and work your way down the sidebar. Or start at his youtube page. Dd9 is working on his advanced alg videos which are found in random places. He's a busy dad who tutors, teaches, makes videos, etc. It isn't sequential because CR doesn't seem like a linear type of guy. He is free-flowing and super chill. My dds love his teaching style. He seems to have a fabulous way of getting concepts across to his students. :) Just roll with it and don't overthink it. He is not SWB. It isn't presented step-by-step. Does that make sense? Thank you. :)

:grouphug: I understand how you feel -- although I always planned for my dc to attend a private high school following middle school at home. Some students thrive in a school environment. Mine sure do. You mentioned drama. Dd14 just played the lead female role of 'Emily' in the spring production of Our Town. After 2.5 months of rehearsals it was one of my proudest moments to see her on stage this weekend for 3 shows. Not a dry eye in the theater when she concluded her last lines. When she took her bows I sat and thanked God in my heart for the gift of this little school. Here she is below. (Yes, I am proud.) :) Both my older dc are highly competitive so school is ideal. They want to excel, lead, compete. All the best to you in your new journey. :)

Get him going on algebra. Dd7 loves CR. Crewton Ramone is free/very inexpensive. Dds can't get enough. Dd9 is working through his password-protected vids ($5/month). Here are his free youtube vids. I asked CR if I could post some pics of dd9 doing his password-protected exercises. To be cont... ETA: CR said it was ok to share. :) HTH!
