Strawberry shortcake!
-
I had a breast biopsy a couple years ago. I drove myself to and from the appointment and received the results myself. My husband is great but I needed time to get my head around it. He also was in a very stressful job and I didn't want to worry him. I also felt that everything would be OK. It was but I don't think this will be my approach next time.

s/o: if you have bought a house, did parents help you?
May replied to cathmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We didn't receive and help from either set of parents and frankly, it never occurred to us to ask. -
Always feel awkward . . .
May replied to DaffodilDreams's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Never feel intimidated! I was surprised how little the teachers at our church's dayschool knew about homeschooling or what fabulous materials are our there written for homeschoolers. I am a former teacher and I struggled to think outside the box while homeschooling my dd. I always admired that about those that didn't have that voice in there head "this is how it should be done." -
s/o Catherine's thread on paying for college
May replied to jld's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Our dd paid for some of her community college classes and books. She drove our oldest car (242,000 mile Camry) and put in the gas. She will go off and finish her degree and we will pay if she keeps a 3.0 and shows us she is responsible. We don't plan on paying for her wedding and have told her such. After 12+ years of private schooling, we will be done.:) -
I pulled our dd after the 3nd grade from a small Christian school. In fact, in 4th grade, there were only 11 kids signed up for the class. I pulled her because I had subbed many times for the 4th grade teacher and I felt she would not have challenged my dd. Do what you know is the right decision for your daughter.

I took my girls when they were in San Diego. My youngest dd was thrill when she could translate some of the Latin.

What does your user name mean?
May replied to Medieval Mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My middle name is May. My grandma always called me that so it has lots of special memories for me. -
My first car that I bought was a stick shift. My Dad had to drive it home for me. I learned how to drive it on the county roads. I still drive a stick shift in northern VA. My husband hates driving a stick because he grew up driving various farm equipment. I haven't taught my oldest dd to drive one though, I kind of like my clutch:)

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I may have to reconsider if I want to sell it or donate it to a family in need.

Spin-off: borrowing money for college.
May replied to Catherine's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think it depends on what kind of degree is being pursued. My friend's son has a pricey art degree (which the parents paid for) and he is barely getting by. Before I would borrow money to pay for a child's education, I would have to see how the degree would transfer into a job. -
I'm finally getting around to selling my used curriculum and have a couple of questions for you that buy it. 1. How do you expect to see stuff price that is in very good condition (bought new, used for 1 child) 2. Are you willing to pay more to have it sent 1st class instead of media mail 3. How do you like to pay, paypal, money order, cashiers check. I think my stuff is on the higher end of price but so much of it is in great shape. I would like to sell it but I don't want to just give it away. Thanks for your input:)

s/o what you would do differently, in general
May replied to jld's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Wished I would have homeschooled my youngest dd sooner instead of waiting until 4th grade. I still wonder if it would have helped her to be more confident. -
Hoping for a decision in two weeks...(job related)

Praying that you have an answer soon. I hate waiting:) -
It's easy to find out what the military pays. Just goggle pay charts for a branch of service and you will find it. The basic pay for all services is the same, housing allowance is different depending where you live, some get extra pay for various things like doctors, submariners, pilots, etc. My dh has over 20 years as an active duty chaplain. Its been a great life for our family. While we haven't had any overseas tours, we have been across the country a few times. I tell people "join the Navy, see the coasts." I don't know when my dh will retire but the thought already saddens me. Blessings on your decision.

Reluctant husbands/spouses
May replied to fairfarmhand's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I never asked my husband if I could homeschool, I just announced it. My youngest dd never liked school and it showed. He was reluctant but I said it was just for one year and when we moved, I would put her back in school. Well, in one year, he could see that she was much happier and doing great in her school work. We moved, dd didn't want to go back to school, so I continued to homeschool. Dh, by this time, could see how much more confidence she had and was happy that she would continue to be homeschooled. Six years later, she is now in a Christian high school and doing extremely well. My husband was the one most disappointed that she wanted to attend a traditional school. But we are both convinced it was because she was homeschooled that she is doing as well as she is. My dh is very pro homeschooling and isn't afraid to sing its praises to family and friends. -
I guess it would depend on what price you are asking for your home. Is it on the higher end in your neighborhood? If people were already at the max of what they could afford and the carpet allowance isn't that much, it could be a turn off. Frankly, I would spruce up the bathrooms before I would put in new carpet.

Non-compliance with homeschooling laws (s/o)
May replied to Greta's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was non complient during my child's elementary years and only registered when she entered high school. I used Sycamore Academy for my transcripts and they wanted everyone to be legal. They nevered checked but I honored their request. I never complied before this time because I saw no need. I asked nothing from the state of CA and didn't want my dd's name in one of their data bases. Plus, I figured they had enough problems to deal with. -
Navy wife here. My dh has been in 21 years and is currently at the Pentagon. I love the lifestyle hope he wants to go to 30.

Who else is waiting for the big snowstorm?
May replied to farmgirlinwv's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Waiting here in Fairfax. I don't mind driving in the stuff since I grew up in Northern Michigan but it's the other drivers that I worry about:) I did pick up a few extra groceries while at the store to get the rest of my baking supplies. -
My husband is an active duty navy chaplain. Unfortunately, he has seen way to much of this. On his last deployment, single women became pregnant and then needed to be flown back stateside. Also, women becoming pregnant a month or two before the scheduled deployment. Someone else then has to go. Maybe another single parent, who does their duty, maybe a young man whose wife just had a baby. You get the picture. The young lady should be given an other than honorable discharged as soon as the military punishes her as they see fit.
