  1. We love R&S English 2! We don't use the spelling - so no help there. The TM is incredibly easy and my dd is picking up the material. She is a young 2nd grader so I was worried but R&S does such a good job that it has been easy. They actually cover quite a bit of material but the approach is so gentle it's not overwhelming. HTH!!
  2. Thanks - I'm still not seeing anything that says my older dd, 9, needs the booster at 10 yrs. old. I'm looking at her history and she had the DTap/DTP (?) at 3 mo., 6mo., 8mo., 18 mo., and 5 yrs. old. What I'm seeing is that the earliest she should have it is at 11 yrs. old. If I'm missing something please let me know. I'm just trying to make sure she gets what she needs but is not given unnecessay shots.
  3. I took my two dd's to the ped. for a checkup yesterday and was told they would need a tetanus booster at 10. I thought you only needed it every 10 years after the booster at 5. I can't find any information online that says we need boosters every 5 years and I am wondering if anyone here knows something I don't. I have gone along with vaccination schedules in the past but have begun to question recently and I want to have all my ducks in a row when they start hounding me in a few months. Thanks!
  4. I have a mole - that I've had for as long as I can remember - and this morning I noticed a 1/2 inch white circle around it. I have pale skin but the area around the mole is noticeably paler! I live in FL but I stay out of the sun as much as possible because I know I burn easy - and the mole is on my breast so it's not like I have it unprotected in the sun everyday. My mom had skin cancer a few years ago but she went to tanning beds and laid out by the pool all the time. Has anyone had this problem and it not been any big deal? Has anyone had this problem and it was a big deal? I'm just trying to figure out if I need to spend the money now (our specialist copay would not be easy to make) or if it could wait. I know my family practice Dr. will not treat because I've already called. Any info would be very welcomed! Thanks.
  5. Toni - I'm not sure about the original poster of the Oregan woman's situation, but here is a link to one that was reported in various media outlets abcnews.go.com/Health/Story?id=5517492&page=1 HTH
  6. I've seen this type of thread come up time and time again. I grew up "free range", I guess. We lived on farms and were out all day, out of sight of our parents. Today I asked my mom if she had the news coverage and the 24 hour media that we do today, would she have done anything different? Her answer - absolutely! She would not have allowed us to do most of the things we did and would have kept us closer. When I was 9 something happened to me they still don't know about - so I wish they had kept me closer. I choose to parent a little different than they did and I keep my 2 dd's a little closer.
  7. My dad and brother were killed in a car accident and so both had to have an autopsy, but we were able to view them. You would have to really be searching for the signs to notice them. I am glad I was able to "see" them one last time. Hope this helps and am sorry.
  8. Whitestavern - the link you offered was awesome - thanks! I'm doing US history with my dd's, 7 & 9, which will include states and capitals. This will be a wonderful addition. I already signed up and received my first two states. :)
  9. I definately worry! One of the reasons I pulled my pulled my girls out of ps was because my dd in 2nd grade had girls who were wearing makeup on a daily basis. I don't mean just lip gloss - mascara, blush, etc. I don't understand why people want their little girls to grow up so soon. My dd, 8 at the time, was invited to numerous "make-over parties" - my girls have played with makeup at home, but DO NOT wear it outside. My husband was embarrassed to walk them into their classroom because of how some of the girls were dressed. I recently read "The Hurried Child - Growing up Too Fast Too Soon", by David Elkind and I feel better about the decisions I have made regarding trying to keep them my little girls for a while longer.
  10. I'm sorry for your loss. My brother (20) and dad were killed because of a car accident 9 years ago and I had horrible dreams for about 2 years. The thing, for me, was talking to a therapist that helped me realize I had some unresolved feelings about things. I, personally, needed to feel that it was ok to have anger at certain people and things that happened. (God, the 16 yr old kid driving the other car, my brother for not wearing his seat belt, my dad for not driving the main road) All so stupid, but things I was feeling angry over and needed to verbalize and work through. I don't know your situation but just wanted to offer a suggestion. I still have nightmares sometimes, about events in the hospital afterwards and decisions we made, but they are very seldom now. I hope you feel better soon and are able to get some sleep. :grouphug:
  11. Wow! Thanks for the quick replies. I guess I should qualify that my 7 yr old dd knows how to write her letters (still occ. reverses) but doesn't seem to be able to put together sentences. She loves to write stories but they are in comic book format - pictures with captions and she tells us what is going on. I think I definately compare too much between my girls and it's hard for me to tell if she's behind or just not where her sister was. I need to work on that. I will definately try your spelling on the whiteboard suggestions - bookwormmama- thanks. I think I will look more into what kinesthetic and visual learners are - I've learned something already.:001_smile: I know when I write math facts on the board she seems to know them quickly and when she was learning to read, she only needed to be told one time what a new word was and then she knew it. Thanks for all the advice - it definately helps to have a place to ask these questions!
  12. I have two dd's, 9 & 7, and have just started my 2nd year hs'ing. My 7 yr dd seems to learn very differently from my older dd. My 9 yr old went to ps through 2nd grade and loves workbooks / textbooks. She has been doing wonderfully. My 7 yr old seems to be totally burdened by doing school everyday. My dh and I talked and sometimes can't believe she is technically in 2nd grade (she has a June bday and seems sooo young), but she is soooo bright. She can understand things that my 4th grader cannot, especially math and critical thinking concepts. Her writing and spelling are terrible though and I don't know what to do. I don't want to push her too hard but I also don't want to do too little. Does that make sense??? She is a very creative kid and loves to draw, build and play legos. She often blows us away with what she comes up with and I want to encourage her in that respect, but I also want her to grow academically. We use Abeka for math, spelling, history (grade 4) and science (grade 4), Rod & Staff for english and reading, and Prima Latina. I am wondering if there is a better way for me to teach my younger dd. Any suggestions / advice is welcome. Thanks!
  13. We're using 4th grade Abeka Language A (as seatwork & review) AND Rod & Staff English 4. Last year we did the same with grade 3 and my dd, 9, did wonderful. Abeka has a lot of review and seems to reinforce skills more than Rod & Staff and I see my dd using the puntuation and capitalization rules in her everyday writing. The grammar part of Rod & Staff is excellent and we use their book as our main part of daily lessons. The 4th grade Abeka language workbook has several sections that are dedicated completely to writing and I believe Rod & Staff is more copywork, with a few writing lessons. If I had to choose just one, I would use Rod & Staff because I think it is better for the long haul. HTH!
  14. I just finished Abeka grade 3 science with my 7 & 9 year old and will be starting Abeka 4 science tomorrow. I would do the same book and I would start with 3rd grade. The 4th grade book goes into greater detail on things learned in the 3rd grade book. The 3rd grade would be between what the two were learning and I do not think either would be bored or too challenged. Also, both my dd's use the same book and we have not had any problems. HTH
  15. Hi! I am new to posting at this site, but have enjoyed reading all the information here. Has anyone used Real Science 4 Kids? What do you like / not like about the program. I am interested in using for my dd's, 7 and 9. I was looking at level 1 Chemistry - is it sufficient to be used for one year of study? Thanks for any information!
  16. I ruptured my ear drum when I was younger and since then when I have problems there is a lot of pain until the discharge. The discharge is always clear to yellow in color and I have no pain after. The only way to stop the discharge for me was to go to the Dr. and start an antibiotic, sometimes even a repeat dose. Also, I have always had a problem since the initial injury to going down too deep in the water or flying in airplanes. If your son has any discharge he should see a doctor - mine never cleared up on their own.
