  1. Oh great! I am actually thinking if it takes a little more than a year that should be fine. Dd12 is doing Abeka's Biology this year and she is really enjoying it and getting alot out of it. So if we do Physical science in 8th and 9th that will leave her 10th for Chemistry, 11th for Biology advanced and 12th for Physics. I think that will cover everything. I really like the looks of the CK-12 Flex book linked above. I am thinking of using that as a spine and then pulling in alot of hands on from some of the resources everyone has listed. I want to keep the last 6-9 weeks reserved for a good science project for them. All of the suggestions have really got my wheels turning now!
  2. Wow Lori, when you type it out like that the first thought that comes to my mind is how am I going to cover all that in one year!! :svengo:
  3. Have you tried cluster feeding before bed? It involes alot of small feedings close together just before bed so that the tummy is good and full. Also I agree withthe above post about self soothing. When you see the first sign of sleepinedd put him in his bed while he is still awake. This way he will learn how to fall asleep on his own. If you rock or nurse him to sleep every time he doesn't know how to do this. Hang in there it will get better!
  4. Thank you ondreeuh. I just looked over the CK-12 book you link and it looks really good. I like that the lessons are broken into bite size pieces. I will look over the other suggestions as well. Thanks again!
  5. Hmmm that is a great question. This year she is doing Biology so yes you are correct we have that covered. We have touched on Earth Science and Astronomy but not in depth at all. She has had no Physics and very little introduction to Chemistry. She is looking towards a medical career so I want to make sure she is up to speed. I have the Apologia Physical Science here but it seems so dry! I really am at a loss where to go once I read your above post. I had not looked at it that way before. Most of her science exposure has come from unit studies that we have done and most of them where in the life science field. Based on the small amount of exposure she has had in the topics you mentioned where should I go from here? She is doing very well with Lial's Pre-Algebra this year and will move into Lial's Algebra next year so hopefully the math skills needed are there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have been pouring over your previous threads trying to get my head to quit spinning!
  6. Thank you sooooooo much! I am working on pulling together a year of physical science for dd9 and dd12 to do together next year. I wanted to see if I could gain some knowledge by reading these post again. I want the program to last the first 3 quarters and then spend that last quarter on a science project. Feel free to share any pointers on the Physical science side of things!!!!
  7. I thought that was her. I went to her member page and did not see any of them on her posts. :(
  8. Anyone know where they are? She walked us through her 2 kids projects from start to finish. I think they were 6 week projects. I have been searching forever and can not find them. Surely someone saved them. I can't even remember Mom's name at this moment.
  9. Thanks Mrs. Mungo! Almost didn't recognize you. I haven't seen your new avatar! I will look at those!
  10. Dd12 will be 8th grade next year and wants to do Physical science. I would love to have dd9 tag along. I have looked at a ton of different programs and I am not fond of any of them. So I am trying to build my own. I need to start with a basic list of what should be covered in Physical Science for a typical 8th grader. It seems even the different programs can't agree on this. Just throw the topics at me!!!
  11. Have you seen this yet? I just stumbled upon it while looking at Guest Hollow's Physical Science. there are some neat clips for science. You have to create a free account to see the different videos.
  12. Oh great! So how do you like it? Seems like if you chose the expermient out of the Hands On book and then used this as a reference, you could pretty much follow TWTM science routine. I am thinking of doing Pysical Science with the kiddos.
  13. Wanted to mention this to you http://books.google.com/books/about/The_World_of_Science.html?id=bHdmOR8Slq4C Since your post I having been looking at the Hands On Physical Science and am seriously thinking about ordering it and The World of Science book. Science is a bust this year so why not ditch it!! Dd9 and 12 could do the experiment in the Hands On book and use the World of Science book for reference and still get a Christina POV.
  14. I think the first idea sounds best!!! We have tried God's Design a couple times and just could not get into it. The text is somewhat dry. Now Hands on Books look great! I had not seen them befoire you posted this. You could use those and use the GD books for refernce material therby giving you your Christian content. This is now an option I have added to our next year plans!!
  15. Ok ladies, I really need some input!!!! We have ruled out going the video school route. After talking it over with dh I know this is not the way I want my children to be taught. So I just have to figure out how to condense our days and which curriculums are best for that. Here is one problem. We started the year with MFW ECC and it has been a huge failure. None of us like it! It is almost too hard for dd9 and bores dd12 to tears. I know life is easier if you can teach them certain subjects together but this did not work. So question #1 Is it realistic to consider teaching a 9 and 12 year old together on things like history, science? Math is figured out, Dd9 will stay with CLE and dd12 will stay with Lial's Truely if I could figure out a way to cover the other subjects like maybe in unit studies that would be best. I just cant seem to find something that will work with both!!!!! Please help me try and figure this out. I have to give my job and answer and I honestly don't know if I should take the promotion or not. I don't want to take it unless I have school figured out. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
  16. Which curriculums do you use? I am thinking maybe having better TM to lay the lessons out for me might make the core subjects easier.
  17. Oh my Goodness!!! I work from home!!! Sorry I didnt make that clear. I guess I would have had the same reaction thinking somene was leaving a 9 year old at home alone. lol I have an office in our home where I work.
  18. So this year I have worked from home but only about 15 hours a week on avaerage. We have managed to get most school done by 12 and then I work in the afternoons. I now have an opportunity with this company to make alot more money but it will be a bigger time commitment. I am not sure yet how much time. I know we will continue to HS and I will have some free time but I dont want the kiddos to have to depend on me to get something done. I have looked at options like the BJU video courses but I just cant think about them sitting in front of the videos all day! How long does this actually take for 8th and 5th grade? Will they still need me? What other options could I do? The main problem with dd12 is getting her work done! She is very unmotivated without me standing over her. Dd9 does her work just fine with or without me. However some of her stuff requires me so she is left waiting on me. I guess to sum it up, what can anyone tell me about the BJU videos and what other independent learning choices are out there?
  19. Dd12 is using Lial's Prealgebra and it is great!!! She is learning alot and it is really shoring up all the basics. I just cant believe a textbook ended up being the answer after all we tried! I have no doubt she will move into Lial's Algera next year. It is direct and to the point with the teaching and this is what she loves. "Just show me how to do it and let me go!!" So it has been a perfect fit. :hurray:
  20. I'll give it a go! Math - Lial's Algebra English - Thinking AG LLOTLR - I have not figured out exactly what subjects this covers completely. Science - Apologia Physical History - Diana Waring's Acient Civilizations and The Bible Piano Lessons Spanish Home Ec (I have yet to fit Latin in!!!!) Seems like there is more I am missing.
  21. Dd9 loves CLE. We tried MM and it left her frustrated. I also agree I love the structure CLE gives me to get things done. We have just added in LOF as a fun supplement and it is making a perfect combination.
  22. I have to say that I agree with the above post abput not worrying about being "behind" in science or history prior to high school. Not sure which programs you are using but I agree that if I were going to do a block for each I would probably spend two weeks on one and then two weeks on the other so you could really dig deep in each if you wanted. You could also look at the topics you want to cover and do more of a specific study.
