  1. This is the subject I struggle to find the most of them all. Dd9 want something fun! Of course, lol and I cant find anything. I need it to be Christian and I would like to be able to buy everything needed at once. If I have to hunt supplies it never gets done. We have tried Apologia, she barely tolarates it. She wants experiments. I did the YSC and they are a joke so far. She is reading through the Apologia Sea Creatures and the 4th grade Abeka science so she is good on the reading part. I just need more hands on for her to do. I would like to have Friday's as our hands on day since that is the day dd12 has Biology labs with her firend. Any suggestions? I am sure I have asked this before!! Why cant I find something good!
  2. Dd12 is learning the skeletal system and I am trying to find a model she can put together. Just something simple made from cut outs that she can assemble and label maybe??? Any ideas??
  3. What do you do or leave out. I know they only do the odd problems in the exercises. Dd12 is happy with the text. However she is worried because she was really hoping to start Algebra in 8th. Since we got a late start with Lial's she is just finishing the 1st chapter and it is November! How can I help her go through it faster? She knows if she hits a roadblock we will have to slow down anyway.
  4. can i ask how you schedule the material. I have AC&TB to do next year but I am having a hard time figuring out to schedule what for each days. I cant imagine adding more to it!!
  5. Dd12 will be using CLE next year. I have them and they look perfect. we tried R&S twice and it was horrible for her. It was very long and boring with alot of writing which she loathes. Just another opinion. I think both are solid programs and it is more of a personal preference.
  6. Yes, BJU is more challenging than Abeka. Most who take BJU life will move into advanced Biology in HS. We tried it and dd12 hated it. Now we did not have the current edition and I understand that they are quite a bit better in presentation. She preferred the Abeka Biology and is really enjoying it and doing great with it. Our plan is for her to do the Abeka biology now and then in HS will take an advanced Biology. There are fewer experiements in the Abeka Life, dd12 did this in 5th grade. The highlight is the year long science project, but you can buy the science project book and add that to whatever you do if you like. Abeka Biology has alot of labs and dissections and microscope work. Honestly either would be fine, I think it depends on what your future plans are and what you are looking for in a science. BJU is advanced and hard for 7th grade average students. Abeka Life is an average life science overview that will get the basics done but not be overwhelming for most students. The Abeka Biology is a good option for advanced 7th graders that prefer more hands on than the Life science has to offer but in my opinion is still not as challenging as the BJU Life. Clear as mud?? feel free to ask any questions, happy to help if I can.
  7. BJU is exactly as you described. It is teacher led. Each chapter covers a different topic but there is built in review at the end of each chapter from previous chapters. The TM is great and break things down for you and uses several additional hands on if you like. The only drawback is that it is originally for a classroom but I used it when I was schooling my step daughter and it worked great. You can find older edition fairly cheap although I understand the new editions are awesome.
  8. Is there a difference in the editions for the KF Science Encyclopedia? We are Beta testing the Chemistry Logic Stage Elemental Science and we need this resource but she didn't list which edition. Does it matter?
  9. hmmm hadn't noticed in awhile. Let me see what I am... Oh, I am Queen Bee!!! Cool!
  10. Will this work? http://sheilawraygregoire.com/anynovelnovelstudyguidep410.php
  11. This is what dd12 has switched to this year after doing Spalding for several years. It is working great!! If I had a time restraint and could not do the Spalding program with dd9 R&S is the only other things I would use.
  12. She is doing the 4th grade level and we have just the text. Not sure if we are missing anything by not having the other books but she enjoys what she is doing and it ended up being really cheap since I got the text for $2.
  13. Not sure what level it is as we read it as a read aloud but my kids really loved Winter Of The Red Snow for the Revolutionary War. We all shed tears on this book.
  14. For us the Charlotte Mason way worked best. We simply start with a blank USA map. I let the kids study a map for 10 minutes then they turn them over and try to fill in as many states as they can in a certain amount of time say 15 minutes. When they are finished we go over them and then they use a different color and fill in the ones they did not know. We did this everyday until they could fill them all in by memory. Then we started doing the same thing but using the abbreviations. Now they are adding the state capitals. It has worked better than anything I have found and takes very little time each day. Oh, we also play Seterra a couple of times a week. They love that!
  15. My dd9 is doing the Abeka science almost completely independent and she loves it. She does the reading and questions and keeps a science journal where she adds her experiment notes and sketches she chooses to add.
  16. why didnt I think of this when we were using it. I would love to see the plans when you have it finished. lol
  17. Just a personal opinion, but at that age I would not interfere too much if she is learning. Yes the basics need to be done but you also don't want to prevent her from learning what she has a desire to learn or kill that natural curiosity. Know what I mean? You could try blocks of learning rather than a strict schedule. This allows longer time chunks in certain subjects for fewer days.
  18. http://www.linneyslatinclass.com/ Probably already posted but just in case, thought it looked interesting.
  19. Just wanted to update after a week of our new system. Wow!!! Things are going great so far. The kids and I are both enjoying it sooo much more. Amazingly we actually got more achieved than we usually do. So here is how our new schedule looks for the rest of this semester. Monday Math - 2 hrs/Bible 2hrs Tuesday Science 2 hrs / History 2 hrs Wednesday Math 2 hrs / Latin 2 hrs Friday MFW Geography 2 hrs / L.A. 2 hrs Thursday is co-op day where everything is hands on, piano lessons, and dd12 meets with another girl who is doing Abeka biology and we conduct their experiments. They are having time to add in additional things as well. Dd12 was delighted to find that she could finish all her reading and have time for a documentary on Tuesday for her Biology class. We are having the time to add in the extra math work ranging from games to hands on. Tuesday history is a documentary of their choice. Since we are doing MFW ECC this year we had to adjust it. Now we use the schedule horizontal. Does that make sense? We do all the science on one day, all the geography on one day and so on. We still spread out the read alouds but add them in at dinner time so Dad can join in. So far it feels great!
  20. Does this come with a teacher's edition? Is one needed? dd12 has been doing prealgebra through FLVS and she is not doing well. She just wants to do a textbook and have me teach her. This is a milestone for this kiddo since me teaching her has always been the problem with her in the past. she is just frustrated and finally ready to accept some help. Any other suggestions for something that might work better than Lial's are welcomed.
  21. We have just started reading a couple of his texts and they are definitely Christian.
  22. Thanks, it looks like a good resource if I could figure out a way to use it!!
