  1. Yep! The kids loved it. :001_smile: We have only read the first one so far, the others are on order by our library.
  2. Yes, CTY is EPGY until you get to the higher grades, then it's Thinkwell. Their sciences are PLATO for middle school and "honors" high school and Thinkwell for their AP classes. EPGY is the Stanford University Program and Thinkwell and PLATO are independent companies. All of these programs are available without the CTY heading for less money, but then you don't have their teachers. ;) The EPGY math that CTY is using is what we are using in the EPGY Open Enrollment group if you don't see that you need the teachers is might save you a ton of money.
  3. I discussed it with my DH and made a call to the pediatrician early this morning. We put both girls on their patches. We are making appointments for further follow-up with the pediatrician. I am also trying to make plans to get out a little more for some me time as many suggested. Sadly since my Dad passed it is just us and my MIL which makes it harder to get out without the kids, he was my go to person for a break. Thank you again for helping me think this out, I greatly appreciate it.
  4. I really really need a break. Two of my DD's are on the spectrum, with my oldest having AS, and both have been on Daytrana in the past. I have never kept them on long, they have side effects with weight loss. I just find that I really really need to put them back on for a week or two to give myself a break. The constant day to day with them off meds for the last 8 months is taking it's toll and I am at wits end otherwise. I have tried everything, my MIL takes all the girls Sunday mornings so I only have the boys, we do the homeschool group at the YMCA so I get a mid week break for a few hours and my DH helps when he isn't working 12 hour shifts but it is rough. The other three seem to be feeding off the chaos they cause lately and it is just spiralling. I just feel so guilty...
  5. You guys are making me feel much better about considering letting my DD9 go ahead in math. :001_smile: According to the AoP website she would be ready for Algebra I, mom just doesn't seem to be ready...
  6. I looked through the website a little more in depth than I had before and realize that my DD9 can easily do all the problems on the "Are you Ready" for Algebra I. I guess I'll email with a daytime request for future too. :001_huh:
  7. Would you recommend this for a child who isn't "into" math? That has been my biggest concern when looking at AoP.
  8. The public school district at the time said we would be looking at middle school placement without question when they tested my DD in third grade. (She is already considered skipped in our district, she started private school at four.) My concern is that she has never had a love for math, she just does it. We are right on that fence too. I guess if she moves on to high school biology next year we will have to look at letting her do Algebra I.
  9. If you have the student pages, you might want to look into a download of the workbook to save a few $$. :)
  10. I would love to hear of one as well. I am really. really. struggling with my DD9 right now and could really use something like this. I think I've read at least a dozen books and haven't found anything like you mentioned.
  11. My DD6's used this extensively in therapy and are doing really well now. I only learned what was combined into my portion of the home program but they went to therapy twice a week for years. I would highly recommend any of it you can incorporate.
  12. We all routinely list our kids test results on the Davidson Board and ask for help. If I feel I can contribute I will definately comment, or at least say I don't know. :001_smile: I have had many people help with test results for my DC in the past. Sometimes you just need an objective opinion, which is so hard when they are your kids. It has helped me a lot to hear what others think.
  13. What about buying the level for the oldest and then adding in the RS4K pre level book for the younger one to use. I am doing this with my kiddos for a quick review of chemistry and physics with my older DD. Her reading will be from the Level 1 and my DD6's (7 in December) readings will be in the pre level. We are going to do the experiements for the Level 1 with all of them. I know that the physics pre level is available for download for something like $13 instead of $38 for the book, with more downloads coming. You can even download by chapter. They are also sometimes available used as well. I would buy for the oldest and then you can always find resources for the younger one to use or simplify the material you have.
  14. I'm in MI and love our library system. What are the overall effects going to be?
  15. You can take two approaches. Either moving up in material or moving out either in this subject or others. I'm not read familiar with CLE so I can't speak from experience but if she has been reading well for a while she may need more branching out at a higher level, less of the grade level repetition. Some kids just get it. So you could look at additional reading materials that might interest her. You could also move up in spelling and vocabulary. The other option is moving out into something else that might interest her. Find out what she would really like to study and going forward with that. I am keeping my DD9 on level for 5th grade ELA right now, just adding more literature and higher level independent reading, because science is her passion, and she wants to learn ancient history. So we are spending more time on those subjects, delving deeper and wider at a much higher level. She is loving it! And with the freedom of homeschooling I don't have to worry if she is taking middle school LA with high school science and math. :001_smile:
  16. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We will keep you in our prayers.
  17. I think this is the conclusion I am coming to. My DD9 is doing so well with her materials I think I am just going to adapt some of the experiments and use various materials to cover what we want/need to cover for the younger ones. :) They are always tagging along and absorbing so much. They have decided physics is where we are going next, they want to build circuits, so I am just going to put together some of the experiments I have from the RS4K Level 1 teacher manual and run with it. I'm going to combine RS4K pre-level and level 1 reading and lots of other stuff I put together from science a-z and the library. We will continue with the life science because they are working parallel to my DD9 but I think a science experiment day for all of them in physics or chemistry would be a great idea, especially with the cold weather coming. They are sad, all the butterflies and moths are dying. Ah, the circle of life. We read the coolest book on the big bang, I used it with prehistory. It is a series written from the point of view of the universe. I'll have to see if I can find the title, maybe some others would enjoy it too...
  18. This is only my second year but with five at home I needed to make changes or things weren't getting done. I am also using the SL cores, it eliminates a few things and the kids are enjoying it. Do whatever you feel is best for your family at the time.
  19. The doc would probably say it's ok on the Hep B, many of us Mom's would say, give the kid a break. :001_smile:
  20. I believe the standard is after 24 hours with no fever.
  21. Wow! I think I need a lesson in searching on this board. :) Thank you!
  22. Has anyone seen any more lab results? I have only seen the original 32 on the CDC site mentioning the complicating strain of bacteria that was present in some of the children who died of this flu. A few of the doctors here were discussing secondary infections that seem to come on sooner in some children with this flu. These then go unnoticed by parents who aren't looking for complications and aren't necessarily trained to recognize symptoms. Since docs don't say, and follow up in 3 days, they aren't being caught as quickly by doctors either. Perry, thank you for making me go back and watch the Today show segment again.
  23. I agree the way they are putting together numbers is very very poor and doesn't give an honest and accurate picture. I also want to comment about the comparison between now and 1918. The CDC and WHO have already tested and found the gene lacking that made that H1N1 so deadly. Let's pray it stays that way.
  24. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/ Dr. Nancy at about 3 minutes and 30 seconds in to the episode. See clarification in following posts please.
  25. Lets be fair, it is early in the season, but following the link you provided you can see that the numbers were up to 68 pediatric deaths in the 2006-2007 Season and 83 pediatric deaths for the 2007-2008 Season.
