  1. That would be great! We did a little with the Language Kogs from RS4K and I'm not sure if she is ready for a full course with all the grammar involved.
  2. This is the question. I am considering Latin for my DD9, probably not until next year. That will be her 6th grade year by PS standard. I think it would be benefitial, she is very science oriented and root words would definately help there. :) Her grandmother took Latin so she could help if I'm having a problem.
  3. Could you elaborate on CTY online courses without the big price tag. What is CTY using for science? What is FA? Hope you don't mind the questions. :) My DD9 is extrememly science oriented and finishing all her middle school sciences this year.
  4. SL is mentioned in this article under Academic Goals. :) I read the article two nights ago and that is where some of the question came from. I will add that I don't classify myself as anything other than a homeschooler. :D I'm just curious about the materials I have chosen, since this is being discussed so much lately. Wish I could ask Susan Bauer herself....
  5. I asked this about SL the other night and got a response that there is a comment about SL in one of the older versions of WTM that mentions SL as classical. I'd love to know which one and more about it but haven't heard any more on that thread. It isn't mentioned in the newer editions other than to list the company. Anyone have an older edition of WTM and care to share? It is mentioned on this website under the 2003 edition but only to list the curriculum.
  6. Thanks you, and yes, typo on my part, I ment FLL.
  7. My kids are younger, down to 22 months. So the dosage is different. I finally got a hold of someone from the Health Dept., the state isn't sending any more vaccine to the counties, so the peds aren't getting any more vaccine. The Health Dept. has a limited supply, but since my private insurance would cover it at my peds office, and I don't have medicaid I would have to pay $125! And that's if I can get in right away because they are almost out. As in out for the season. :001_huh:
  8. Everyone is so hung up on the H1N1 flu shots, there isn't any seasonal flu shots available for my children in the area I live in. The peds office had a few, and won't be getting any more. The Health Dept. doesn't have any. There's plenty for adults on every street corner, but none availabe for high risk children! Utterly ridiculous. I don't want to debate flu vaccine, just needed to vent that my high risk kids can't get the vaccine. Oh, but the H1N1 vaccine will be here very soon, they could get that. :glare:
  9. Do ELL or WWE have sample pages anywhere? I was curious about them: looking for ideas for next year for my younger ones. I didn't happen to see any samples on the Peach Hill Press store, at least from the link provided. Am I missing it?
  10. My library no longer carries the copy I read and with all the goings on lately I was wondering if someone could give me more details? I can't remember much other than the listing of the company. :bigear:
  11. I have been wondering about this since there is a much smaller group of kids using the LAW. I posted a similar question on the yahoo group so maybe there will be some answers there. I might have to ask on the Davidson Forum out of curiousity since I know many kids there have used it. :D My own DD doesn't use it so I can't even comment either. :)
  12. You just described what makes choosing curriculum so difficult for these kids, not to mention expensive at times. ;) Right there with you, hang on and enjoy the ride. :auto:
  13. My DD is prepping for prealgebra right now using a similar technique. We are using the Holt Mathematics Course books with online textbook access, which is the guy that does Thinkwell. I chose this version over Chalkdust for now because my DD needs the interaction and teaching that I give her. She then can access the online examples, but I am still the primary teacher. Maybe the same thing would apply to your son and he just needs that interaction?
  14. I use Sonlight secularly as well. (I would love to hear more about the yahoo group.) :) We had a really bad experience with K12. I have hundreds of dollars of their workbooks laying around. I really liked the SL guarentee when I decided to try it, I am now a convert. We also love PLATO science.
  15. What about the Speilvogel middle school text? My DD9 likes it. We are using it with SL Core 6.
  16. I went ahead and bought all three for my DD9 with unlimited access. :001_smile: Science is her area and she is determined to complete middle school science ASAP to get to the "really good stuff". We are also supplementing some with Glencoe books for a few areas and for some of their labs. My DD insists on dissections too. :D Overall I think it is a good program. Our state uses it in their virtual academy. I think it will take us a little over a year, as in a full calendar year. We are using the Glencoe Life Science and plan on using their Physical Science with Earth Science book next to use with the other two PLATO courses. You could do the same with the books you have purchased. You figure high school science will only be the same material in more detail. My DD has 6 hours logged online and has 5 of 24 modules mastered in the Life Science. (Coordinated with 3 of 27 Chapters in the Glenoe book.) FWIW, she tends to leave the program running so I'm not sure how accurate that really is.
  17. I don't think you want to know how much I have spent on history this year. :D I will say I buy new when I know something will need to make the long haul, like my Core 6 materials. I know they will go through 4 more kids, I just plan on a new IG when I get that far. I save where I can, I use the SL payment plan, I substitute the SOTW and the Usborne IL for Core 1, and bought my Core K used, since it will only go through 2 children. I am also buying some of the Core 1 materials as I go, in $25 groups because my plan to get them from the library turned into more work than it was worth with five kiddos and others obviously trying to do the same thing. ;) I figure, four kids a day @ 1.70 a lunch would be $1224, so if I stayed under that I'd be thrilled.
  18. Thanks! That does make me feel better. I was looking at something like the Michael Clay Thompson or something more formal around third/fourth grade as well. I want to focus on a love of reading and understanding what we read right now, one of the reason I chose SL and literature based studies when possible. I appreciate the support.
  19. Yes, (ELA, PS abbreviation I guess for English Language Arts). My oldest DD9 attends PS for ELA because she has Asperger's Syndrome. She attends for speech and language services and has a dual enrollment written into her IEP because of the overlap of pragmatics and inference meaning.
  20. Wow, never thought of uniforms, that would save me a ton of money!;) I register in Michigan as non-public school so my kids get auxillary services from the school district and I get the perks of all the teacher benefits and the ability to purchase teacher materials from all the restricted publishers. I would check out www.hslda.org for your state.
  21. I guess that's what I'm asking... Pros, cons, experiences, thoughts. I am really questioning where we are going with ELA. Is is possible to have them in two different spots and not be teaching them seperately forever? What do I need to look out for that might be lacking in SL? ELA is my least comfortable subject all around and I am constantly questioning my ability to teach it.
  22. I think I asked the same question in reverse yesterday, I had stopped. :) I ordered the MM downloads of the Addition and Subtraction blue books for $8. I really like the way they are set up and think they compliment the SM very well. We are working through 1A right now, so behind where you are. My girls also use ALEKS quicktables a few times a week to drill facts. We use the HIG, the texts, workbooks, EP and the CWP and still use the above and other online math sites. :iagree: with the comment about how the program is used in Singapore. It is one part of their curriculum and doesn't stand on it's own there, no surprise it needs supplement in the US as well. I researched it expensively before I bought it so I went in with my eyes open in that regard, a disclaimer might help...
