  1. I think it depends where you live too. It seems a bit high to me, but we don't have a special diet and live in a very low cost of living area.
  2. I have 3 in that age range. Oldest (now 25) moved out on own at 18 after graduation but didn't go to college. 2nd (now 23) moved out also at 18 after graduation, and my last adult child is 19 and still at home because he is in school--commuting while living in our garage apartment.
  3. Are the outburst only in relation to school? Or do you see this reaction when he doesn't want to do something like chores? Has he always been a bit harder to handle? I had a difficult child that I sent to school (who also has some learning issues) and she was good as gold for them. But you won't know that until you try. (And remember any decision you make isn't permanent) I totally understand feeling like you can't do it anymore. It is draining. I agree evaluation may be the best route.
  4. This is what my husband said to do but I am afraid I will ruin it!
  5. I am trying to figure out what to do with some of my teacher's manuals. Most of them are bound like paperbacks instead of spiral. I love for a book to be flat plus in one of them it contains the weekly lesson plans that I want to print. I can't get them to print well because of the way it is bound. I am looking for ideas. Should I take it apart and put it in page protectors or get it spiral bound? Any other ideas?
  6. Out of my 7, two boys are above average in math, one boy average, one girl average, and three girls below average. We have never told them that math is for boys or boys are better at math, but in our family it has worked out that way. Incidentally, all of my boys hate reading (but read well) and avoid it as much as possible. Two of my four girls would only read if they could. The other two girls dislike reading but bot have reading liabilities.
  7. Yes, but my daughter is dyslexic and doesn't read on her own for pleasure. I use Megawords which has a bit of voc and products from Evan Moor.
  8. I had a few with really bad attitudes that went to school. They are as good as gold at school. Kinda frustrating to me, but some kids seem to do better for someone else. She can always come home the next year, if you want. I have one I sent to school for 2 years, and he is coming home next year. He learned homeschooling is much better. I did tell him if he starts in with the attitude, back he goes.
  9. Is this common practice? I homeschooled my first 2 but neither went on to college. Third child graduated from private school and was accepted easily into the colleges of his choice, so I really have no experience with a homeschooled child getting into college.
  10. The school is in New York. We live in Texas.
  11. My daughter has been in private school for 9-11 and wants to come home for 12th grade. One school she is interested in has the following requirement. For homeschoolers: Proof of high school graduation must be sent before you arrive. This requirement may be satisfied by supplying any of the following: 1. Official scores from the official High School Equivalency Examination (GED). 2. A letter from your local superintendent of schools as proof of your readiness to enter college and that your home schooling was conducted in accordance with state laws. 3. Certificate of graduation from a diploma-granting organization or non-traditional school. Failure to provide will result in a registration hold Anyone ever seen a requirement like this? I really feel like it is forcing homeschoolers to use a cover school for a diploma or take the GED. Makes me mad.
  12. I think if I were going to do Konos, I'd do a workbook- based math because Konos, math-u-see, and right start are all very mom intensive and will take a lot of your time in planning, preparing, and teaching. I can't comment on the others listed.
  13. I am almost 50 and slim, but my ugly veins keep me from wearing anything above my calf.
  14. Not sure if that is the right title. I am in planning mode for next year. I will again have my dyslexic 6th grader (next yr) and am bringing home my son from private school to homeschool him for his 8 th grade year because he asked me to. Both of these kids hate school and hate reading in particular. They just want to get school over with to do what they like. They could care less if they have living books, projects, etc. I love to plan and create my own curriculum particularly in science and history, but it is very time consuming, and I also have a child that will be a senior at a school and we will be dealing with college app. Etc. My BS meter is fairly low after being a parent for 26 years so I don't know if I should create my own plans only to hear how much they hate it. If I just give them a canned curriculum that I haven't invested time in planning, it won't bother me as much if they hate it. BUT, I don't like canned curriculum as much. I know kids can learn from work/textbooks but I just don't know. Thoughts?
  15. Is this available for kindle unlimited only? That is what is showing up when I click the link.
  16. Try this fun, homemade game. http://myhomeschool101.blogspot.com/2007/03/decimal-street.html
  17. I have one child in a k-8 school and 2 at a private high school (20 and 30 min away)and one at home. Rides are the trickiest part, but one daughter just got her license so it is getting easier. Not positive for next year but it may be one in local public school, with bus access, 2 at home and one in private high school.

  19. It is the same school district my other daughter was diagnosed by. They used the Wj-4, the WRMT-3, the Gort-5, Ctopp-2. My tutor said those are fairly standard tests and she was tested by the dyslexia coordinator of the district.
  20. I just had my 9th grade daughter tested through the local school district for dyslexia. She is struggling in her private school and has symptoms similar to my diagnosed dyslexic 10 year old. But she is not dyslexic. She has poor reading rate, low reading comp., poor listening comprehension, and low vocabulary. They had no recommendations. I took the results to my other daughters dyslexia tutor, and she suggested to have her tested for adhd inattentive type. Or maybe auditory processing problems. These all have similar symptoms. Any other suggestions?
  21. You don't have to answer to us, but how is your relationship with this child? Do you feel like you can manage her difficult behaviors at home? Parent-child relationship is very important imho too. I have a difficult child and if she had problems in school, I would have to find a different school option besides homeschooling because her being home would hurt our relationship. Good luck.
  22. I'm there too. I'll be 50 this summer. I have been homeschooling for 21 years and only worked a bit. I need to work part time soon and eventually full time (in 3 years), but I don't want to do anything with my degree (children/teaching). It is frustrating because like you, I don't have the financial means and no retirement to speak of. I don't even know what I like anymore.
  23. I think what hurts most is that one child in particular is not doing well, and he blames me/homeschooling for his troubles. And sadly he is a criminal. (Been in jail 3 times and has a felony) So, I do take it personally, wonder if I did things wrong, etc. yes, our children are their own selves but many of us hope they carry on things like religiously/family beliefs. Thank you for sharing.
