  1. Wow. Two different opinions. You're not helping me ladies!
  2. I feel your pain, Beth! Maybe do some workbooks and watch some videos each week. What about Brimwood Press? Anything there that might suit your needs?
  3. I have a 13 year old struggling reader and settled on a textbook approach. I got Glencoe's Journey Across Time. Each unit has a literature component, as well as suggested titles on their website. DS will listen to audiobooks and read Horrible History books. Oh! We'll also be watching DVDs from The Teaching Company. http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078750504/ I bought this from Barnes and Noble, as they had all textbooks on sale with free shipping. I am also intrigued by K-12's Human Odyssey. Good luck. It's really frustrating not knowing what to do.
  4. Homeschool Buyers Co-op has a deal on them. I love what I see! Just haven't ordered yet and the deadline is tomorrow! http://www.adaptivecurriculum.com/us/index.html
  5. Sue, I am no expert, as I am new to hs. I use Spelling Wisdom, but I looked at both when trying to decide. I think dictation is a must, whatever program you use. It forces the writer to slow down and think about what he/she is doing. It is also a great time for us to discuss the author and the meaning behind the passage. I also require dictionary use for unknown words. I am not familiar with Phonics Road, but I know people seem to love it. I would use both and work on one SS dictation passage a week, unless there is a lot of dictation in Phonics Road. Good luck deciding! Lisa
  6. I surely understand Christine. Enjoy your time off! What a smart woman you are. I can't break my addiction yet! I'm too new at this hs thing! Best wishes with your projects. Lisa
  7. I can understand why you are concerned. And I don't have any great answers. It is because of your concerns that our local ps won't test (unless forced) until later. Young kids just aren't used to testing under these circumstances. I would tell him that he's going to play some games, do some puzzles and answer questions. Be sure to tell him to NOT give one word answers. Practice with him. That's all I've got, unless he's allowed to bring in some sort of "lovey" to make him more comfortable. Best of luck!
  8. I just downloaded four of the Blue worktexts and printed much of it out. I love what I see so far. DS13 will be using it to brush up on his basics. He is just coming out of ps, so I have no experience with any other program. It seems to provide "tricks" and different solutions for many problems. It provides a lot of practice. Looks perfect for what I need!!
  9. Just an update. I ordered a bunch of the worktexts from Math Mammoth's Blue series. I think it will be perfect for us! Thanks for the suggestion. Once, I feel that he is comfortable with the basics, we'll move on to LOF and Lial's BCM. I am sure I saw on Math Mammoth's site a section with ideas for supplemental word problems etc. I think it mentioned Singapore and Zaccaro's. Anyone know where this is on her site? Thanks again. I feel like we're on track. :001_smile: Lisa
  10. I think I'm going to buy a roll of banner paper and add stickers from Pandia Press. I should get on that, eh? :001_huh:
  11. I think you're right - that was a response in my cross post on the high school board. Thanks!
  12. Thank you all for the suggestions! Unfortunately, the videos are no longer on YouTube! Off to check out the other links!
  13. Well, I knew that was too good to be true. Thank you so much for the heads up! ;)
  14. http://www.gpb.org/irasshai/term I can't seem to find any video files to open. Is it me? I am computer challenged... My ds10 has been obsessed with Japan since he was very little. He wants to learn the language before he attends a Japanese Camp next summer. Any other ideas? Thanks! Lisa

  16. Another PA homeschooler here - thank you! ;)
  17. Wow. So glad you all informed me. I will look into Developmental Math, Singapore 5 and the Key to Series! :001_smile::001_smile: Lisa
  18. Yes, that is why I bought BCM! But, it seems to be slow enough paced for him. Each topic is thoroughly explained, covering the basics. I know pre-algebra is just that - a program that covers the basics. But, real "pre-algebra" books seem to assume a lot of prior knowledge. BCM doesn't! Lisa
  19. Ds is entering 7th grade and, after getting A's in ps math, I thought he was ready for pre-algebra. After working with him, I see that he most certainly is not. He doesn't understand fractions, decimals, long division, square roots etc. Here is what I have. Lial's BCM and DVT's. I think this will work great. I also wanted to supplement with something like Singapore or MEP. MEP 6 is too difficult, I think. Singapore 6 seems just right. Which would you choose and why? He LOVES LOF Fractions, but he is not ready yet. He definitely needs the basics covered first. Thoughts? Lisa
  20. Heather, how is Great Leaps going? Lisa
  21. Ann, I am intrigued by this program. Can you tell me more about it? Glad to hear it works. Lisa
  22. Harleysville here! I'm waving to you both now!:seeya:
  23. These two "raisins on a plate", which were sucked out of me from ten years of breastfeeding, to be beefed up to a size B. Just a B. Aaah, even if I did have the money, I'm not sure if I'd have the guts. So maybe that's what I'd like - the guts to get a boob job. ;)
