  1. So I watched it. What did you all think? First thoughts, It felt like the Class instead of Doctor Who. There were too many people (I don't mean the final 3) I didn't care for the on the nose speech towards the end (people can evolve.......) I don't mind a little self referential stuff, but it was too much. I did like her upbeat tone. I loved, loved, loved Capaldi, but his character could be a real downer. Hopeful is nice. It will be nice to have more than one companion in the TARDIS. I liked it when it was Amy and Rory and Rose and Mickey. It will be good to have a mix The overall story wasn't bad. The alien was an interesting combo, but good. As always, the acting was excellent. They find good people.
  2. I had a lovely Sunday run. I've been trying to work on school work all day. I got a little done. Doctor Who was super distracting. It was on in the middle of the day, and now I don't want to focus. I did just order tights for cooler running. I had coupons for Athleta, and I snagged a pair on clearance, so I got 2 pairs of tights. ?
  3. I had started off well this month, but then got a stomach bug. It took me out for 2 days, but this morning I made it back to the gym. My workouts have been good; I really need to focus on better eating habits. It will take a while to get my running up to a point where it helps with weight, so I just need to be better at the eating thing. I'm eating quite a bit of junk food, and too many carbs. School makes it harder, but I know i can do it. I did lifting at the gym today, followed by a good stretch and 15 mins in the sauna. I love that thing. I need to add in some things to strengthen my rotator cuff muscles. My right shoulder has been a problem and it just dawned on me today that I should be proactive in treating it. Hoping to get a run in tomorrow.
  4. I'm so sorry. ((((hugs)))) it is hard. We had to put our family dog down 2 weeks ago, and it was unbelievably hard.
  5. I'm with your dh on that one. Yes, you do help maintain some strength and balance by using stairs everyday. But when you can't do stairs, for whatever reason, they are one of the largest hindrances to a person being able to stay in their home, unless, of course, you can completely live on a single floor and not need the stairs. Stairs in your home will keep you in in patient rehab longer, and stairs may even mean you can no longer maintain independence. Many people never get to that place, but if a decline in health does get you there, not having stairs is huge. I also recently learned another one. You want a counter top microwave. That simple item helps people stay in their home longer. Currently, my dh and I don't have a solid plan. 5 kids and some big transitions have kept us from being able to save as we would like. We do have a retirement account, but I know it's close to half of what it should be (thanks to seeing the market tank a few times). We are also making sure I kids get through undergrad with no debt. I know that is not considered smart ( i mean, you should save more for yourself than you spend on your kids), but we have felt that this was important. Anyway, while we have a retirement account, we know it will not do. For now, we plan on working for as long as possible. My dh, as long as his health is good, can do his work for a long time. When I finish my schooling, my job will let me keep going for quite a while. Not as long as my dh though. I could probably work till 65, maybe closer to 70, unless I continue on to even more schooling, which I don't know if I'm up to doing. My dh and I are both very familiar with everything that could go wrong with your health as you age. And while the finances are not what we would like, we are making other choices that will help. It is not easy. And I think it will get even harder in our society as we get older. But that is a different discussion.
  6. I ran 3 miles this morning. That is the most in quite a while. It felt pretty good too. And I agree, as we get older, changing it up is necessary. I would like to add in swimming. Maybe when I finish schooling I can get a better schedule going. And @soror , 12kg is 26lb. I forget how to convert but I know that one. ?
  7. I went to the gym on Thursday for weights and this morning I ran. Running still hurts. Not hurts in a really bad way (I'm not getting an injury), but rather, hurts because my hamstrings and hipflexors are sore from the lifting. Doing both might be too much, but I'm going to give it more time. I am not running a lot. 3x's a week for only 30 mins, and even that is a run/walk combination. I'm currently lifting 2x's a week. My shoulder was hurting, so I decided to switch it up and run more than I lifted. I've been sitting at the computer most of the day working on a school project. I feel fried.
  8. Glad you got a new dryer! And very glad that you found out about a bad electrical issue before it was too late!
  9. ((((((hugs)))))) A few thoughts: The hospital should have a social worker/ case manager that you talk to about insurance/financial issues. Make sure you get with that person and find out what options you have. You will not be able to stay. Let the hospital help you figure this out. Make sure you are kept in the loop and that they run everything by you. Talk to the therapist to figure out what happens after your child is released. I'm so sorry. I hope you son makes some headway at the hospital.
  10. That is how labs are done for Physical Therapists. It is not how is done for a Physical Therapy Assistant. Same is true for Occupational therapy. For OT school, cadaver lab. For OTA, animations from YOUTUBE. ?
  11. It's hard to find something that has a combination of sitting and standing. I will say that a PTA or an OTA program do not have cadaver labs or I would be out of there ? Good luck finding a new career path!
  12. Ok, I'm not going to lie. You kind of depressed me. I'm not 50 yet and I already have that pain. ? ? I told my dh last night that I now feel old and as if getting older is not going to go well for me. ?? I've been working out consistently for 10 years. I recently added lifting so I think that's what's making my hips feel extra stiff and sore. I've been rolling, stretching, taking rest days, and nothing seems to help a whole lot, though I do feel better when I do all of that compared to when I don't. Hope you find a solution. When you do, please come and share.
  13. Oh how awful. So sorry. I never used the kill switch, but I guess it's a good idea. My only advice is to start slow. If that frustrates you, keep the speed slow but increase the incline. Hill work is good strengthening work. Are you using weights while on the treadmill? Maybe get wrap around kind instead of free weights? Hoping you get back to exercise soon. It is a good stress reliever.
  14. Ran Friday and did an hour of yoga this morning. And @soror, sorry about your dryer. Your week is not going well. ((((((hugs))))))
  15. Is the other kid not being moved to DEAP? I would think he would be there for at least after Christmas. And sadly, I have to agree with the advice of pressing charges and then suing. A child who does that is a danger, and not just to your son. The school knows that. In a way their hands are tied. They have to provide education to every child. And it is an expensive and time consuming process to have a child removed from the school. And if said child's parents fight the process or the child has an IEP it's even harder (I know, it should not matter, but I know it does). My dd24 is a teacher. They had a child (like 2nd grade) who attacked a teacher with scissors. Said child also hurt other children and threatened people saying she would get a knife. It took until January (incident happened in Sept) to have the child removed to the alternative school. I'm so sorry for your son. It's frustrating. We've had the conversation with our boys that you can never hit back. You just can't. And again, if your child hits back, and the kid does have some sort of classification, guess who they go after? Very aggravating. The schools are not equipped and have little ability to really deal with violent kids.
  16. WOW! That's exciting! Congratulations to your dh on the new position.
  17. It's been a week. Ran on Sunday, lifting on Monday, ran on Wednesday. I was supposed to go to the gym this morning for lifting but my dh had to head to work early, which meant I had to take my son to school. I did some yoga instead. It is always nice to stretch. I should get my eating under control, but I'm not super motivated to do that right now. I'm too stressed over other stuff. But my workouts are getting more consistent which is good. My hamstrings have been killing me from the running, but I'm trying to roll out (with a foam roller) and stretch more.
  18. yes, yes, yes. I have a BS, so yes, I could have done a lot of things. But a Masters comes with at least a $50,000 price tag . And I am almost 50. My Community college program will cost me $6,000. If I work full time as an OTA, I will make between $45,000-50,000 a year. This program has a great ROI (using my finance background there ? ) then any Masters level program does. And then there is the time commitment. This program is a lot of work. And I still have kids plus ageing parents. A Master's level program would be even more work. I think if there is a program you really want at a Master's level, and you can do it without going into debt, then go for it. But there is nothing wrong with going the practical route either.
  19. The only way I would do that is if I had a child (older teen or adult) who was back from rehab and that child needed extra accountability. i can't imagine any other reason to do that.
  20. I'm almost half way through the occupational therapy assistant program at my local cc. I have a BS in Business Admin and finance from a long, long time ago. I did have to take a few pre-rec's but everything else transferred. So OTAs can work part time, it's not a desk job, and you get to help people. ?
  21. Thanks everyone. I just called the vet and managed to get a time early Saturday morning. The receptionist was amazing. She works scheduling magic to get me a Saturday appointment. I want to cry non-stop. We need to wait to tell my ds13. He will be a wreck. I glad he will have the weekend to deal, and I'm glad we can give him Friday night.
  22. We have a 16yo beagle. We've had him since he was a pup. He has been slowly deteriorating. About a year ago he had a stroke, but recovered. He is incredibly thin. You can see every rib. He eats, but he also throws up a lot. He has started urinating in the house often. I think it out of panic when no one is around. He is shaky on his legs. He looks so weak. He also looks as if he's in pain. And every so often when he gets up he looks disoriented. If he were a person I would say he was not oriented to person, place, or time. It's like he doesn't know where he is or who we are. But he still gets up. He still loves getting his afternoon treat (in a Kong). He still goes out side to mess. He is still happy to be around us. The other issue is my 13yo ds. He will not take it well. Watching the dog over the past week makes me think he could have a month, maybe two. But, if we decide to put him down we get to control when it happens. We can schedule it for Saturday (I believe, I need to check). We could spend Friday night explaining to the kids and saying goodbye. I'm so upset. It's been hard. Honestly, I think we would have put him down a few months ago if it weren't for my youngest. The dog seemed off all summer. I'm just looking for advice, maybe some BTDT.
  23. That's so great!! Love the picture and glad you didn't pass out!
  24. One more thing to add. Often places that do the testing have information about resources. So if your current psychiatrist is clueless, find someone else.
