12th grade plans?

Recommended Posts

My dd will be a senior and will be graduating in December. I am planning for the next year, and just curious to see what everyone else is doing.

My dd is planning on becoming an RN at the local community college, and then working for a bit before going on to get her BSN.

DD will be doing

English at the community college

Computer class at the community college

Government - probably Notgrass, and I will add in a few other books, along with some economics (though probably not a whole separate course in econ)

Senior project - apprenticeship at a CSA, will do journal, read some

books, and do a project at the farm

Anatomy and Physiology - probably Apologia since she likes that or maybe

the Holes book. She'll start in the summer.

Consumer math - my dh feels that this is imperative so we'll do some of the Abeka book, don't know if we will finish it

We're planning on doing some reading a lot of books, though I don't think I will make it a lit course, just for fun.

I'm sad the journey is ending, but I'm proud of her.

So what are your seniors doing next year?

He's doing:

Great books a la TWTM, mostly foundation documents this year, with some renaissance stuff - by now the chronological order has been abandonned because we did things with the holes of time we had available, finishing reading Spielvogel's Western Civ

Intro to chemistry at CC

Precalculus at CC

French with French in Action and a few other things

Japanese with Pimsleur Japanese 1 tapes (to keep him from forgetting what he learned as a freshman)

US History just finishing up extra reading

a little Latin reading to keep him from forgetting his Latin

Peace studies continuing to work on this

gymnastics

My senior has been taking some community college classes, classes at a homeschooling resource center, and AP Statistics through PA Homeschoolers this year.

Currently she's waiting to hear back from several colleges as to their admission decisions; she's also waiting to hear back on financial aid offers.

Next year, we hope that she'll be happily settled at a good college, learning and enjoying life!

Regards,

Kareni

This year my senior had to take some required courses: Health, Economics, PE, English 4.

Then we added the electives that I thought were most important: History and Consumer Math/Life Skills.

We chose not to continue with French (she had had 2 years of French plus 1 year of Latin in 9th gr.) and decided not to do an extra year of Science or Math (other than the Consumer Math).

This freed up her schedule for a part time job (between 18-24 hours per week) which I feel has been more beneficial to her than the extra classes would have been. She really needed some real world experience! Besides, the money has been helpful as she is saving towards college.

Oh, how fun! I'll play since I've just been working on finalizing plans for dd's 12th grade year. Let's see....

1 semester of Trigonometry (to finish the course: Life of Fred)

1 semester of Psychology (Homeschool Psych 101)

1 semester of American Gov't (Notgrass) with some economics added in

1 semester of Philosophy (Smarr)

Essay Writing (about literature) Oh, and research papers...good idea! Maybe two of those

Literature (Ancients w/Smarr and then skip to fun reads like 1984, Brave New World, Canticle of Leibowitz, and The Martian Chronicles)

Choir (community college)

Senior Project (senior piano recital)

Select Vocal Music Group (community college)

Piano 4 (private teacher lessons with festival/auditions/and playing for church worship services)

Musical Theatre (community college)

PE: Life Guard Training (community college)

and probably still volunteer work at the public library

OPPS! That's what I forgot: Chemistry! (Apologia with TTC DVDs)

I 'think' this is the final decision...who really knows?

I can't believe we have Senior Year planned! At this point we are just crossing our fingers that we'll get her into all the right classes, but here is the plan:

AP Statistics (PA Homeschoolers)

Latin 201 @ the local university (with any luck she'll test into this class)

Science w/ Lab @ local university (hoping for Astronomy)

English/History - Great Books Study (TWTM style all year with a new book group; we will race through history with some extra emphasis on the ancients)

Two Electives @ local university

Graduation will be planned for June 2010. I'm still toying with various ideas for the graduation party/ceremony.

Oldest ds will be a senior in the fall.

Intro to Chemistry 1 and 2 at CC

English Comp 1 and 2 at CC

Spanish 2 through a tutorial

1/2 credit of Southern History (a grad requirement)

1/2 credit of Economics (a grad requirement)

A senior project (a grad requirement)

He will be taking College Algebra over the summer, because it is a prerequisite for the chemistry course. He will also take journalism and current events at the tutorial, but we are listing journalism as an extracurricular activity and current events I hope to incorporate into his senior project.

:001_smile::001_huh::blink::crying:

It's kind of a mixed bag of emotions!

A senior, yes that's us too. We're still discussing classes so some of these are tentative plans.

For sure:

Science Olympiad competition, March, '10

PE --- Inline Speed Skating

Spanish at the local CC. If DS decides to go to UD (the school down the street) he'll need the equivalent of 4yrs of a high school foreign language or 2 yrs at the college. While he has worked through Rosetta Stone he doesn't feel he learned very much from RS. He wants to start fresh this summer and work through this requirement.

Physics using one of MIT's open courseware classes

For math he wants to do a computer programming course. I'm thinking of using one of MIT's open courseware classes. We might add in one other math course too, depending upon how he does on the AP Calc BC exam in May. Suggestions?

These two classes are definite: US History from 1870 - 2000 and US Gov't We'll use a wide variety of primary texts for these two courses.

DS will take these AP tests next May: World History, US History, US Gov't, Physics C

We're still quite undecided about English. He might take the UD required English writing course at the CC, unless his SAT or ACT English reading and writing scores are high enough to exempt him from that class. He so hopes it is. I know he'll be reading books from WTM Modern Age book list but we're really not sure how we'll structure it at this point.

Senior project? hmm, I suspect it will be something related to microbiology.

Posting late here:

Our dd will be a Senior next year. She did the WTM history/literature sequence in grades 7-10 to be on the same schedule with her brother who is 2 years older. I just wanted to be able to discuss the books with both of them.

Next year she will be doing:

AP US Government self-study, (using what, I still don't know yet)

AP Calculus BC self-study, using Chalkdust Calculus, the whole book + study guides

Apologia Physics I with the DIVE CD (or maybe Bob Jones Physics)

AP Art History, using the REA Study Guide and The Annotated Mona Lisa

Bible Study

Finishing Rosetta Stone Spanish Year 2

Studying for the Chemistry Olympiad, to keep up with Chemistry. She's studying for the AP Chemistry Test this year with Zumdahl + study guides

Essay writing (lots of scholarship applications)

C. S. Lewis literature, finishing up whatever she hasn't read this year

She hopes to study biochemistry in college, and maybe go to medical school. I can't believe homeschooling is almost over for her.

12th grade? Already?

We are awaiting the schedule from the CC and learning about other options. Interestingly, my son is expressing a desire to take a second writing course at the CC in the fall, then a literature course in the spring.

American History and Government are both on the schedule.

More Latin and French. Calculus.

I will not be surprised if he tucks General Chem II at the CC into the program.

He and I are talking about an archaeology related senior project. Next month he is working on a dig for a few days so we hope that he makes contacts who can help him with some ideas.

But we still have a lot of work to do before 11th grade is over! Stay tuned.

I have a senior as well. She is very driven and so far has talked me into:

Latin V (Scholars online)

Greek II (Scholars online)

Senior English (Scholars online)

German III and/or IV (Okahoma State University, German Online depending on how much she completes in 11th grade and over the summer)

Biology AP (PA Homeschoolers)

Calculus AB -or- Statistics AP (PA Homeschoolers) -- dh wants Calculus, I think Statistics more useful

Art History (PA Homeschoolers)

Gileskirk Modernity (w/me!)

Economics (w/me)

Career Planning (w/me)

Extra curricula:

Morris and rapper sword dancing

Shakespeare play (one of Hamlet/King Lear/Henry V/Loves Labors Lost)

Piano (NMC grade 9 w/grade 3 Harmony & grade 3 Music History)

Way too much, but down considerably from what she's taking on this year.

My younger daughter is in her 13th year (we do "14" years of school at our house--don't get confused). We treat "13" as the equivalent of Junior Year, and "14" as Senior Year. :) The biggest difference is that she's already completed the requirements to "graduate" from a normal school at the end of 12, and 13 and 14 are bonus years. (So, yes, she could graduate now, but we do not let our children drive or graduate before age 18.) She's only 16yo.

So, this year she's enrolled in the community college for dual enrollment classes. She's taking English 111, Art Appreciation, Health, Spanish 111 and Digital Photography this semester. At home, she has an Ethics course (that we do 12th, 13th and 14th years of school), continued History and Science readings, and several volunteer and leadership roles she's juggling. We are also still working on math. I'd like for her to complete Calc I at home before taking College Algebra at the CC next year, and she's not there yet. We'll work on it more this summer.

This fall, she'll take English 113, Spanish 112, History (world or American, her choice), and either Biology or Chemistry (her choice) at the CC. We'll continue math at home through the fall, as well as Ethics, but add Literature readings for balance with all that history and science. :)

For her "Senior Year" she'll take two maths at the CC (College Algebra and PreCalculus or Statistics), two English Literature courses, another science of her choice, and several electives. I expect she'll want to take some humanities courses, and she is also interested in psychology. At home, we'll balance whatever she doesn't choose at the CC with readings and writings as necessary. Of course, she'll also have a lot of testing and applications to manage.

I think she's on track to graduate either in December 2012 or in May 2013, depending on how she manages her time and college application process. She will probably *not* attain an AA at the community college (although her older sister did), simply because she has other goals than pure academics.

Somewhere in the middle there between Junior and Senior years, her older sister is getting married (next January) and that might interfere with a semester at the CC. If so, we'll just school at home that semester, and jump back into CC classes as needed.

Can I say how much I *love* homeschooling high school? It's just so easy to do! The student contributes to the planning, and really makes it all happen before your very eyes. You get to hang on for the ride, and marvel at how much they learn, grow, and mature. It's a spectacular part of parenting, these high school years.

Moira,

As my son's language choice is German also, I am interested to hear your dd's OSU German III/IV plan. What do you mean, German Online depending on how much she completes in 11th grade and over the summer? Where has she been learning German I / II ?

Carole,

How was your son's taking AP Calculus BC test today? My son too was in Calculus test this morning, so I am aware of it.

I wonder if you would like to consider for him to do Multivaluable Calculus (, Calculus 3) or Linear Algebra.

He began the fall of 10th grade. We made him do it because he is not sports-minded at all and we felt he needed to be in some sort of ongoing physical activity (we're such mean parents!) Well, after the first month of classes, he loved it and already had more body confindence KWIM. He is part of the leadership team now (at a new school since we moved) and hopes to be a black belt before he graduates.

Blessings!:001_smile:

I had to look to see when I wrote my note --- March 24th --- right about then we took account of where we were in Calculus relative to what we still needed to cover. He knew the AB material and got '5' from the practice tests but we hadn't started the BC material. DS was getting swamped too with his other AP classes and studying for the National Chemistry Olympiad test. Something had to give so we put the Calculus on hold and canceled the AP Calc test. Why bother taking the AB test if you are going to take the BC test? DS also decided that he wanted to go through and really understand the material and not just get through the test. He'll be taking Calc BC with PA HS'ers this coming year (one who remembers Taylor Series & Polar Coordinates), a different text and I hope he really loves it.

His plans for next year are a bit firmer now:

Physics (AP Physics C although I'm not going through the approval process but he will take the test)

Computer Programming (AP Computer test to be taken)

AP Calc BC

20th Century History

Am Literature (we're going to read & discuss many of the books listed in the Am Lit thread from this board)

Spanish from the CC --- do not know if this will happen. DS does not drive and in DE it is a 6month + process...

I'd like him to take AP US History and AP European History tests too but he's not too thrilled with the idea at this point.

We are new to high schooling as well as to homeschooling, as my son completed 8th grade in public school last year. So we are in learning stage and now hear many things in this forum. Interested to hear about National Chemistry Olympiad test. I am very sure it will require spending lots of time from ds. My suggestion of Calculus 3 was because I misunderstood that he would complete calculus BC this year. If your ds has done BC but still wanting to learn some part with absolutely complete understanding, yes your plan is fine. Strong foundation in math will always be helpful.

Dd tells me it's all a matter of organization. The line should read:

German III and/or IV depending on how much she completes in 11th grade and over the summer (Okahoma State University, German Online)

She took German I with OSU over last summer, completed German II in April this year and is now working on German III. So it looks likely that she'll be able to get to German IV next year.

Thank you, Moira! So she has been in OSU German all the way, by selecting just next level each time.

If I consider placing my son into OSU, I will have to wonder if the transition would be smooth. Does your dd see each levels in OSU are closely connected?

You named the major reason I come to these boards everyday---I learn new things to help educate my boys. DS' AP Chemistry recommended he sit for the State Chemistry Olympiad test which DS did and he also sat for the National test. The test is put together by the Am Chemistry Society. The state test is 2hrs long, his had 100 multiple choice question. The national test was gruelling. 2hrs for the multiple choice, a short break, 2 hrs for short-answer questions (DS loved those), 2 hrs for a lab (DS wished the entire test had been all lab) The lab consisted of 2 parts; part 1 they were given many vials with unknown powders and told to ID each one! DS loved it. The other part they had to determine the heat of fusion for water. They couldn't just state that it was such-and-such number but had to show their work, write their procedure and numbers....

DS said that the tests covered more material than AP Chemistry and thankfully he wants to take it again next year.

My suggestion of Calculus 3 was because I misunderstood that he would complete calculus BC this year. If your ds has done BC but still wanting to learn some part with absolutely complete understanding, yes your plan is fine. Strong foundation in math will always be helpful .

You are correct that a strong foundation in math is best. DS wants to go into engineering so I'd rather he know it well and not have to repeat the work at college. Also the one college he is looking into will give 8 credits for the AP BC Calc with a score of 5 provided you pass their test. If he knows it well, and it is fresh in his mind from just completing it senior year he should have a better shot at getting the credit.

Well my plans are still flexible. At 12th grade, I am giving my son a lot of his choices. Mine would be more great books and Latin.. but he has many worthwhile things he wants to do. We will see how it turns out.

Community college: one physics class, calculus 3,possibly computer class

Debate and speech club- he wants to focus mainly on this

Economics- he was given a textbook that he wants to use-we'll see how it goes

English and History-probably finishing up this year's Omnibus 3, but I'd also like to do more ancients...

Latin.probably continue in Latin 2
