  3. Wait, I have been away from the forum for really long time. And I just found this thread. My homeschooled son is going to college this Fall. And I have not been aware of this PHEAA grant stuff. Is this too late to jump in? If not, how to get a PHEAA Form mentioned in this thread? Thanks.
  4. Just saying we are really confused about Pitt's process with homeschool kids who are not associated with any homeschool organizations (like PA Homeschoolers Association) when the state law does not require homeschoolers to obtain it's membership.
  5. Here are two quotes I found from another homeschool forum. Do these quotes have merit to reflect why homeschoolers in PA (who are not associated with homeschool associations) are now facing problems in getting admissions from own state colleges?
  6. Pitt problem toward homeschooled kids from Pennsylvania is more than giving us, homeschool parents, simple disappointment. Have to wonder if Pitt is the one not following PA state homeschool law, when the law allows you to get transcripts from associations like PA Homeschoolers, or allow the school districts to certify kids’ homeschool completion based on yearly evaluations of Portfolio. Or, kids even can request Diploma from PA state upon getting 30+ college credits. My son’s college transcript with more than 30+ did nothing in Pitt, and placed him as an “Incomplete†applicant. Then we requested the school district’s homeschool evaluating teacher to send letter to Pitt. The teacher said my son has done a lot more than required. The Pitt responded with one simple line that “It’s not sufficientâ€. So, at this moment, I assume that homeschool kids in Pennsylvania cannot prove legal homeschooling status to our own state college, Pitt, unless we associate with PA Homeschoolers organization and get transcript from them?
  7. I am afraid that creekland is exactly right. Has Pitt been accepting homeschool kids (from Pennsylvania) only when they can send their transcripts through homeschool organizations like "PA Homeschoolers" ?
  8. Creekland mentioned that “I distinctly remember a couple kids doing calculus in grade school. Their steps were correct, but they had no idea why they were doing what they were doing except as "steps." They could explain the steps, but not the reality behind them….I still saw/see no need to rush overall…. Short of burnout, rushing math won't hurt those capable of it. I just see no need to do it.†Here is my answer : There is no need to rush math! Sure of course! I don’t think anyone is asking any kids to rush math! Kids you referenced are an example of “rushing†in math with whatever (wrong) reason. So I do not see why I need get into talking about these type of wrongly “rushing†kids. Rather, they should be guided to build strong foundation in EACH step in math to prepare to meet more complex and abstract mathematical one can find in upper level of math, at least in post-AP Calculus BC. Creekland also mentioned that “A few kids can truly understand more advanced math at a young age in the same way there are some gifted in other things (music or whatever).†Yes, what I have said was about those very rare “few†extraordinary gifted who indeed can handle advanced, complex and abstract high level math easily several years early. If you have those kids at home, the man (referred in “plansrme“’s post)’s advice does not apply to them. as you have no reason to slow their speed down just because they have reached Algebra.
  9. You mentioned early that “He strongly advocates speeding through everything before Algebra and then taking math in its normal speed†………. I have expected to hear your thought why you also agreed with the man. So your daughter slowed speed down after reaching Algebra because of her personal intensive gym/ballet schedule, not because of the man’s advice to do post-Algebra math at the normal speed?…….Well, everyone has own comfortable math learning speed, and I would say just follow such speed all the time accordingly. Sure you would proceed slower some times if there is more complex and/or abstract. Reaching Algebra is not exactly turning point. IMHO, you do not need to assume that you have to intentionally slow down after reaching Algebra.
  10. Terri, I personally do not see why you need to adjust your kids' learning math to the normal speed upon reaching Algebra. Although post-Algebra would be more complex, but not exactly that abstract, at least up to AP Calculus BC in high school. Without his advice, you could have tried yourself to allow your homeschooled son to learn at the fast speed as usual. One of my kid is in 8th, does AP Calculus BC in our public high school with 5 to 6 years older kids. This is an one academic year course in school. She just wishes that she could do it at her fast speed freely. At such uniform speed, she puts as little effort as possible on it.
  11. I have an 8th grader who needs to take AP in May too. The kid is in AP Calculus BC class in our public high school now.
  12. Congratulations!!! You are all Thrilled indeed!!! :party:
  13. Kathy, I am so happy for you and your daughter. You both have worked so hard and you got what you deserved. Hope your husband also finds good news for himself soon. You and your family are just amazing!
  14. I see you are getting lots of good advice here. Do not let your daughter's current math problem alter who she is. If she is a lovely young lady with lots of gifts, let her be proud of herself. Math problem can be resolved seperately.
  15. Hi Sharon, Nice to hear that you prepared your son well for his college. Just one thing, what was his preparation in Chemistry as homeschooled high schooler?
  16. Getting AA/AS has not been his goal in taking college courses. Rather, he has been taking courses as part of his high school life. He would continue take courses if he is interested. But he sees that the course offerings are limited in CC, specially in math/ science field.
  17. Hi Cindy, Perhaps I would have qualified as BTDT if my son and I wanted. He just turned 15 recently, and has all credits for AA but one required course. He is intentionally delaying to take that required course, not to seek a degree anytime soon, he is a just sophomore high schooler. By the way, congratulations to your dd, for getting scholarship. What kind of scholarship is it?
  18. QUOTE : "I contacted the College Board with the question: Is a pen required for the following AP FRQ?" Thank you GardenMom and Carole, for bring this issue to my attention. My son took 2 AP tests (AP Calculus, AP Music Theory) as a 9th grader last May. I do not have any memory about this, so I don't think we had advised him to bring a pen with him for AP tests then.
  19. Kathy---WOW, your daughter did have a good news today! A BIG Congratulations to YOU and Your Daughter!!!!!!! She is going to hear another big fantistic news next week.
  20. Janet, thank you so much! Wow, is that right? I'm concerned, because it's too late for me to do anything as my sophomore has already too many credits. And still 2 more years to go. It's quite painful to know this stuff too late as well as his taking Calculus came too early unusually.
