Anyone do SUP? I wanna get one!

The past couple summers at the shore, the home we rented had stand up paddleboards and I just loved it.  I think I would really like to get one but have no idea what to look for. I can't afford top of the line and we would use it on flat water in inlets or lakes.

Does anyone have the inflatable kind? How well do they work? That would appeal for travel.

Other opinions on make or other characteristics? I'd likely buy off Craigslist.

BTW, I had another related thread on kayaks. Found an inflatable one on Craigslist, used once for $50. It's been great for our purposes!

We have one regular sup board that can also be used as a windsurfing board and we also have a blow-up sup board. The blow up is great. Feels a lot like the other. No problems. Much easier to transport than the regular board because it just rolls up and fits in the trunk. The regular board would be okay IF we had a rack on top of our car but noooo... dh insists on using a mess of old towels and pool noodles to place the board on. We are "those" people you see on the highway. LOL.

They're fun once you get the hang of it. My vote is for the blow up unless you can store a real one near the water or are civilized and have a rack.

DH just bought me one! 💕

We decided inflatable is most practical for us. I wouldn't be able reach up high enough to get a hard board on top of my car, and we don't have great storage space for one. Plus, inflatable are virtually indestructible so we don't have to worry about dings or chips and scratches. Some are easier to inflate to the proper PSI; pay attention to reviews.

We use them on quiet tidal water or lakes--no big surf for me, thanks. DH did tons of research and prioritized 6 inch depth over 4 inches for more stability. For my height (5'3), either a 10'6 or 11'6 board would be fine. Pay attention to width also--make sure it isn't so narrow it will be unstable or insufficient for yoga.

Weight matters too. Make sure you are able to carry it easily.

There are tons of deals on Craigslist and eBay. Happy searching and have fun!! :)

I am fascinated by the folks who do SUP yoga. That's got to involve a real learning curve there!

It's not as hard as it looks! I was able to do yoga moves my first time on a SUP--I went from really, really knees-locked nervous to down dog is under an hour. :).

I'm still learning how to master a headstand on dry land, but I can't wait to do it on a SUP! It's my new summer challenge. :)

I am so glad that there are so many positive reviews for the inflatable ones! It would definitely be most practical for us.

What brand did you end up with?

I'm tempted to go look at Amazon and see if I can get one before this vacation is done!

We own a SUP shop, where we sell and rent boards. If possible, ask to demo a board before you buy. That's what we do with our customers, because there can big a big difference between brands, models, and lengths of boards. Check out the specs on the board if you can, too. That will let you know weight limits, etc. that vary a lot. Inflatables are a great option!

If you have a LL Bean discovery course near you, I highly recommend them. My DH insisted he didn't have the balance to SUP until he took a class. They had him up and going--and confident!--in no time. :)
