Word Nerd
I wasn't sure whether to post here or on the Accelerated Learner board, but since we don't currently homeschool I decided to post here. DD9 recently completed testing for our school's gifted program and qualifies, so we'll be meeting next week with a team of people. I've written down several questions and things I want to make sure we discuss. What else should DH and I do to prepare for the meeting? Since our school district is small and this will mainly be a pull-out program, I want to talk about what accommodations might be made in the regular classroom. What else should I be aware of? Tsuga
No idea for a pull-out program, but good luck!
Mrs. Tharp
Your child will receive an IEP for the pull out program? That would mean he has qualified for specialized instruction in reading, writing, or math. I've never heard of that for gifted but that's great! The first thing I would do is request a draft of the IEP, to be received at least three days before the meeting, so you can review it. Then you'll be able to ask much more specific questions, such how such-and-such goal will be implemented.
Word Nerd
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but that's what the paperwork says. ETA: In my state, all students identified for gifted services get a gifted IEP. I suspect how individualized the plan is in practice varies, though. I hope it isn't in name only. Arcadia
You can google for GIEP. Little Nyssa
I think the weirdest thing about our town's gifted orogram has been the leaders of it... Nice teachers, but with no grasp of what their task is or how to communicate with parents. They speak some kind of educational Newspeak that is almost complete gibberish. I wish that when our kids had first qualified I had stopped the staff members and asked them to define exactly what they meant by all these unfamiliar terms, as soon as they first mentioned them. Library Momma
When my daughter qualified for the gifted program it mean she also needed an IEP. In many ways it is a formality. The pull out program she participates is her accommodation and she is on the highest track of classes in all subjects. If she needed to move beyond that top tier of honors classes then perhaps the IEP might need to come more into play.
friscomom
I wish we had a similar setup in our ISD, an individualized plan for each of the kids currently in the GT program. Right now (my DS is in 3rd grade) he just gets pulled out of his classroom, along with all the other kids identified as GT and spends 1.5 hrs per week with a GT teacher. Best of luck for your meeting! Hope you get a clear and relevant plan for your DD! (GT - Gifted and Talented)
Word Nerd
We had the meeting, and it went well. We discussed the testing results and the gifted teacher shared what they'll initially be focusing on based on her strengths and where she needs more advanced or in-depth instruction. The IEP had general, overall goals listed, and the gifted teacher also shared more detailed information about what specifically they'll be working on with DD. She won't start the program until fall (today's the last day of school), so we don't even know who her classroom teacher will be yet. He'll work with the teacher on supplementing the classroom instruction.

When I was a kid (same state. different district) they had a whole class of GT kids. Though I don't remember what was different before 3rd grade and my son is 2nd so we'll see how it goes.
