blondeviolin
You'd think he was a toddler! He mindlessly chews on his shirt sleeve, his towel, his DS stylus, etcetera. Is this a medical issue? Should I buy him a chew toy? Tell me ends soon!
Moxie
Is he sensory seeking in other ways? They have chew toys for older kids who have a chewing need. We joke that ds8 will some day poop out a garment!!
zoobie
DS does it when he's anxious. DD1 does it in a sensory seeking manner. Edited: forgot the other half. DS will squeeze a ball here at home instead or play with fidget toys. Totally not chewing-related, but it works for him. DD I will give her gum or baby carrots. freesia
3 of mine were chewers at 5/6. The first was anxious, but the others weren't/aren't. I am beginning to think it has to do with the big teeth coming in (for some kids). My oldest used some rubber oxygen tubing soaked in vanilla to chew on. BarbecueMom
I just bought chew necklaces for my 6yo and 4yo because I kept getting bit and licked during read alouds. They never realize they are doing it until I start screeching. I chewed on my hair until 2nd or 3rd grade and have my own sensory issues, so I get it. I just don't want their mouths on me when I'm trying to read!
Rosie_0801
My son did that because of retained mouthing reflexes. I did it as a kid because I didn't know what to write in my stories at school. Not that chewing anything brought my muse closer, but it was something achievable. :p

LOL That's why so many of mine are chewers (and I also remembered the one who didn't chew still sucked her thumb at 5/6).
AK_Mom4
I can't even count the number of shirts that DS22 ruined by chewing on them. He aged out of it about age 9. DS18 chews other things. We won't discuss the number of headphones he has ruined by chewing the cords while he plays on the computer, I finally bought him a pair of wireless head phones. Very common I think. Laura Corin
I bought Chewytubes for both of my boys, and hung them on strings around their necks. They didn't wear them outside the house, but the in-house chewing was enough to satisfy their needs. They grew out of the need. L
