justme824
So next year we'd like to rent a cabin on a lake somewhere for about a month. This lake would be great for exploring along the shore, taking a swim, maybe even pushing a canoe out. There would be nearby trails to explore, maybe even a great creek to play in. This lake would be not too remote, but near a quaint town with at least a great place for ice cream and a decent grocery store. I'm not too particular about where this lake is, just that it will provide that magical 'summer spent at the lake' feel. Any ideas on where I could look for such a place? Mergath
You could try Ely, MN and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_Waters_Canoe_Area http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ely,_MN http://canoecountry.com/cabins/#west I lived in Ely for a year, and it's a nice little town. You could also stop by the International Wolf Center and see the wolves while you're there. :)
Chris in VA
What's your travel budget, how remote do you want, and what part of the country? I, for example, wouldn't spend thousands of dollars to fly my family somewhere where the rental cabin was only $500. Nor would I drive across the country just for a lake...ocean, maybe, but not a lake. :-) ymmv
Mama Geek
There are some really nice cabins in Alaska on lakes that are more remote. That might cost more than you were thinking though.
Harriet Vane
The area around Sleeping Bear National Dunes Lakeshore may fit the bill. It's a water-rich region, so there are tons of lakes both big and small. It's also really fun to canoe the Lower Platte River, which is a shallow, slow-moving river that empties into Lake Michigan. There are cherry orchards in the area and cute little towns. Way more remote, and very beautiful, would be the area around Taquamenon Falls in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The towns there aren't as cute and touristy, but there are a lot less tourists, which is nice.
MedicMom
Depending on where you are, I would consider the Finger lakes region in upstate New York. It would meet all of your qualifications.
LostSurprise
Which part of the country? I'm in the Midwest so upper Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP (upper peninsula of Michigan) have thousands of lakes and many towns that fit the bill. Rose in BC
There are many places in British Columia that fit that bill. If you want to come to BC I can suggest some specific lakes.

sparrow
I love Grand Marais, Michigan. Sure, it's Yooper, but also somewhat artsy. You can hang in the former stomping grounds of Ernest Hemingway and Jim Harrison. This cabin looks awesome, but quite remote. It meets and exceeds *my* requirements for a magical lake vacation: http://www.vrbo.com/140060
Rose in BC
I'd love to know some! http://www.takysielakeresort.ca/accomodation.htm http://www.roundlakeresort.com/ http://www.cariboocabins.com/ http://www.discovernaramata.com/ http://www.cultuslake.bc.ca/default.aspx?PAGE_ID=138 http://shuswaptourism.ca/plan/accommodation/cabins-and-cottages-listings http://www.waterlilybay.com/history.html Here are links to some areas where we or people we know have rented cabins. There are many more. British Columbia is a beautiful province to visit and I will put a plug in my area....northwestern BC. In my town you can fresh water and salt water fish, lots of hiking, etc. We are surrounded by coastal rainforest. If you decide on BC let me know. Saraswati
Look at the Adirondacks in NY. Our favorite lake vacation spot so far! The Adirondacks are beautiful! I grew up in NY, and we had a "camp" house on North Lake. Spent every summer of my childhood in those mountains.
