4kids4me
So I let a couple of loads sit longer than I should have. I think what happened is that someone in the house took one load out before it was completely dry and I let it it for a couple of days. Then the other load sat in the dryer, almost completely dry, or another couple of days. I tried washing them again, but they still smell toxic. Should I just throw it all out (ouch), or is there anything I can do at this point to remedy it? I've GOT to talk to dh about fixing the dryer, though. An hour should be more than enough time to dry a load. Thanks!

If they aren't to bad, just a slight smell & not any growth, I'd rewash them & use vinegar in the rinse. Your clothing will NOT smell like vinegar. hillfarm
If you have any on hand, Pine Sol will also take away the smell. I love their orange scented product for this purpose.
Happy
I second the Pine Sol recommendation. I've also found that allowing everything to air dry, then rewashing really helps. I've even tossed a load of wash out on the trampoline to let the sun and fresh air do it's thing before rewashing. Good luck!
ladydusk
I do the white vinegar thing ... works great! (even on towels ...)
4kids4me
Wow, I've got Sisters-in-Laundry-Mishaps!!!! Good to know I'm not the only one. Well, I'll be up to my eyeballs in laundry but I expect a clean-smelling home when I'm done! Thanks, Caralyn :)
Hillary in KS
This happens to me occasionally. I fill the washer tub with HOT water, and add soap and vinegar. I let it agitate just a bit, then turn off the washer and let the clothes soak for as long as I can. (Sometimes overnight!) I then finish the wash, and check to see how they're doing. Tammyla
Vinegar in the wash will not harm the fabric. I just dump a cup or so in add the regular soap and put it in the softener dispenser just in case. Unless you have black-mold things will be good as new after the wash. Btdt... purplemama
I have never tried the vinegar for mildew, but will if it ever happens. I do know one thing that did work for me in the same situation was Spray N' Wash with Oxy (it is a double-barreled container with pink on one side and clear on the other). I let it sit for a few hours (not overnight because it might harm the color) and then washed it again as usual. Jennifer
Mommyof4ks
Another vote for hot water and vinegar. Yep, I've done that a few times. The swim wear at my house is famous for this lol.
Laurel
I keep a bottle of white vinegar in the laundry room for just this purpose. :tongue_smilie:
3littlekeets
Odo-Ban works very well, too. It leaves an antiseptic smell, then rewash. It kills the bacteria. If vinegar fails, odo-ban won't.
4kids4me
I put in laundry detergent, oxy-clean, vinegar and a little Pine-Sol for good luck. roflolol I let it agitate for a few minutes and let sit for an hour (didn't have all day to let it sit 'cause I had three loads of nastiness plus regular laundry to do). The results? Much better. Perfect? No! ;) A few things have an ever-so-slightly reminant of a smell. Slightly. But most things are back to normal. Who'da thought that it could be remedied? It stunk! Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm so thankful to have that stinky job over with.
ElizabethB
I just re-washed a load of laundry. While I have never gotten to the needing vinegar or pine sol stage, it's good to know advice for the laundry impaired! I'm feeling slightly better about the whole thing to know I'm in good company! Starr
I've used a little bleach with towels. I'm glad to hear about the vinegar!
