eaglei
So what are some practical uses for the ashes from a wood stove or fire place other than just putting them on the garden area?
clwcain
Well, with pig excrement and a period of fermentation, you can make gunpowder. HTH
LaxMom
Or, you can make your own lye, then use that to make your own soap... or, you know, get rid of bodies.:D
Laura Corin
You can compost them, I'm told. Laura
In The Great White North
You can put them on icy sidewalks/driveways instead of salt.

Heather in the Kootenays
They can be used to get rid of mites on chickens. Just put them where chickens must walk through them or dust bath in them. I've heard that you have to be cautious about putting them in the garden but I really don't know the whole story. dragons in the flower bed
So what are some practical uses for the ashes from a wood stove or fire place other than just putting them on the garden area? You could make a rocket stove!
eaglei
Thanks Everyone! The gunpowder and the rocket stove have piqued curiosity around here! The gunpowder got one of those raised eyebrows responses, and the rocket stove got "what's that?"

joannqn
Not that this would use more than a tablespoon at a time but my mom mixed ashes (fireplace or cigarette) with mayo and used the mixture to remove water rings from the wood furniture. It works too!
dragons in the flower bed
I had just read about rocket stoves in Toolbox for Sustainable City Living when you posted, so it was on the top of my mind. Here's a wiki entry on it.
