Car schooling ideas for Kinders/1st?

Hi Everyone,

We're in the car a fair amount and I like to let the boys listen to Magic Tree House on tape or books like it.

But I'd really like to find some addition or subtraction or spelling CD's or tapes to let them listen to. Hopefully something fun and catchy that might help our process.

Or even something fun about the states.

Anybody love a singing or talking tape/cd on the basics for Kindergarten or 1st?

Thanks for any advice! I'm open to anything that might be stimulating and fun for the car.

Thanks again!!

Alicia

We enjoyed all the twin sisters cd's.

When caught without a cd, we did things like analogies, give advice to mother goose and fairy tale characters, car math drills (adding numbers we see on license plates, signs, etc), make up stories about people we see on the street, pretend our car was a space ship or submarine.

Our geography co-op class is using this http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=28043&event=CFN I believe they have it on CD. Dd8 loves it and has learned a lot. There are other subjects in this line as well.

First Language Lessons has a CD for poetry memorization and other things. We haven't used it but it would be good in the car.

I have heard these are excellent, even if they are targeted for older children. I am hoping to borrow these from a friend http://www.lyricallearning.com/

This may be too young for your kids, but the I love the Discovery Toys Sounds Like Fun CD (we have the tape ;))

It has songs that teach Alphabet Letters, Alphabet Sounds , Simple Addition , Counting 1- 30 , Counting by Tens , Counting to 10 in Spanish , Simple Spanish Phrases , Opposites , Manners, Months of the Year and Children's Favorites

I listened to this all growing up and my son just started listening to it.

We like the Schoolhouse Rock CDs - they have grammar, math, science, etc. Super catchy, contagious stuff :)

We also play games with license plates. If car 123 RST drove past, we'd say something like "Red, Sweaty, Tiny" (adjectives) or "Rover Sped Through" (sentence structure, Noun/Verb/x). Or rush to scream out "6!" (addition). Just whatever speaks to our particular fancy that day.

We always have a crate in the car filled with on topic library books. With your Kinder kids, great picture books and exciting non fiction like DK books on bugs, castles, etc. The other thing that has worked for us (we drive to AZ a couple times of year....11 hour car ride) is a clipboard for each child with a pen/ pencil tied on a string. You can do a tracing wipe off board of letters, etc.

The other thing in long books on tape that they might not otherwise sit for. A great one or two to start with is Ralph S. Mouse or Charolette's Web.

I've even once or twice brought along the portable DVD player and checked out nature videos from the library.

You can accomplish quite a bit on the go.

Good luck and enjoy!
