StaceyL in Canada
My youngest son (gr 4) will finish RightStart Math E this year after having done the earlier levels. For various reason, I's rather not do the RS geometry program.. What to use next? My older sons all bounced around from Math U See and Singapore and other programs before settling into the Lial's books from abut gr 7 onwards (Lial's BCM followed by Introductory Algebra, a geometry program (for one) and then Intermediate Algebra). My youngest won't be ready for the format of Lial's BCM in gr 5. Any suggestions re what to use for the next year or two? If he switched ino the Singapore program at this point, what level would he be at? Thanks.

Capt_Uhura
I've seen folks move into either SM 5 or SM6 after RS E. There is a SM placement on the website you could give DS. Hopefully those that have switched will post. My DS is finishing RS D. We'll move into E, dabbling in SM as we go along then spend some time finishing up the CWP books. Capt_Uhura
CWP is Singapore Math's Challenging Word Problems. Many who do RS also do CWP as some feel RS is a bit lacking in word problems.

yslek
T is using RS C. It will be the last level of RS I have hime use, because I need to free up more Mommy Time. I plan on moving him into Teaching Textbooks 4 after he's done with C; the timing should work out. I was going to move into Singapore, but T is completely uninterested (I borrowed a text from a friend so we could check it out.) He likes the idea of TT, so even though it's expensive, that's what we'll do. :001_smile: I imagine that you could have your ds try TT6 after he finishes E. buddhabelly
Here is a post copied from the Right Start homeschool forum. It is dated May of 2008, and is by Carissa, a customer service representative who uses Right Start with her child/ren. You will see that Right Start recommends VideoText for algebra after all levels of Right Start. They also mention that you should play ALL the fraction games in the game book, not just the ones that have been "assigned" in the Right Start curriculum. OK, here's the post. By the way, we are also finishing Right Start E this spring/summer, so I'm making the same decisions. "After Level E you should do RightStart™ Mathematics: A Hands-On Geometric Approach (Geo App). It will take a longer than a school year to complete (at least a 1 ½ years). It is not Geometry, though it has many of its elements. It is using the child's math skills they have acquired in the previous levels and now are putting them into useful functions. For example, instead of doing worksheets to work on multiplying decimals, the child will find the area of a rectangle that is 5.2 by 3.2, and of course you have to multiply. This allows the child to gain experience and meaning for math all at the same time. Personally, I have been doing the Geo App exclusively with my oldest child and have found that he is utilizing every math skill from basic functions to critical thinking to algebraic operations. I had tried to add in another program and found it to disruptive for us, so we have stayed with the Geo App. The only thing I have felt that it lacks is long division (even though it is taught in Level E but not reviewed in Geo App) and that is a simple fix with giving my son two long division problems each week. We are about two months from being done and will start VideoText Module A in August. So, I hope to encourage you that the Geo App is not only geometry but is a useful way for your child to see that math is functional and useful. Please feel free to email or call 888-272-3291 if you have more questions. Thank you for giving your child a RightStart in Math! StaceyL in Canada
...We did try VideoText way back (with my oldest son) and did not care for it due to its lack of review, so we will not go that route. However, I will look over the RS Geometry again. Part of the reason I wanted to avoid it is because my son finds it a bit challenging to use all the tools accurately, and it can become frustrating. If we spread it out over 2 yrs, though, he may well "grow into" the tools :)
Heather in VA
I'd do Life of Fred Fractions followed by Decimals/Percents. Heather
StaceyL in Canada
I had inquired a couple of years back and the author apologized but said he had too many difficulties when trying to ship to Canada. : (
SBP
We went to BJU 5, which has gone OK, but not great, mostly because I'm not a great math teacher and I really missed the RightStart TM. The BJU TM just isn't the same. We've supplemented BJU with Life of Fred and have enjoyed that, but we couldn't use it as a stand-alone program because it wouldn't begin to be enough review for my particular children. Next year we're switching to Chalk Dust Basic Math, which seems to cover a lot of the same material that BJU 5 did. I'm really looking forward to trying the DVD lectures and think my kiddos will benefit hugely from a math teacher more qualified than their mama! Best of luck in your search - SBP

linders
Not the OP, but DS8 is starting RS Level D and it suddenly occurred to me that I need to think about getting from here to Algebra (when I can then ponder endlessly over which Algebra). I especially appreciate hearing more about RS Geometry and the ideas on supplementing with various other curricula.
jenadina
I plan on using RS geometric approach + Life of Fred Fractions and Decimals and Percents, and then sticking with just LoF from there on. Life of Fred also sold through Rainbow Resource :)
