ScoutTN
My son’s new school requires mechanical pencils. Which ones are good?
maize
I prefer those with a wider lead, 0.7mm or above. The lead doesn't snap as easily.

I was wondering about the easily-broken leads.
amiesmom
We like these Pentel pencils because they have a good weight to them: Pentel 0.7mm (P207-C) Blue P200 Series Automatic Mechanical Drafting Pencil Refillable Lead Eraser (Pack Of 6) https://a.co/d/4oXDGzn I bought these, (but haven't tried them yet), because they have longer erasers than the ones above: Pentel Twist-Erase III Mechanical Pencil, (0.7mm), Turquoise Barrel, 12 pack (QE517D2) https://a.co/d/dZrXHvG
Spy Car
The Rotring 600 pencils are beautiful, heavy, and expensive. If they are dropped the tips can bend or break and Rotring's customer service is poor. I have two Rotrings that I love (but I don't share them). More practical/economical are the Pentel P200s. Very good quality pencils. Currently on sale on Amazon. Two 0.9 pencils for under $6 in classic Pentel yellow. These don't have the heft of the Rotrings, but... https://www.amazon.com/PENTEL-Mechanical-Drafting-Pencil-P209BP2K6/dp/B002VKWSYI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=138N5POH7MNT7&keywords=pentel+p200+mechanical+pencil+0.9&qid=1658275875&sprefix=pentel+p200+mechanical+pencil+0.9%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-3 Bill

Arcadia
DS16 “collects” mechanical pencils. He has them in 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9. His current favorites for homework are the 0.3 mm lead ones because he likes the fineness for math homework (DS17 use a 0.38mm pen for homework). My husband bought a lot of 0.3mm pencil lead for him from Amazon. These are the 0.3mm lead pencils he use: Uni Mitsubishi 552 Series Pencil for Drafting - 0.3 mm Uni Kurutoga Mechanical Pencil Standard, 0.3mm, Black
scbusf
These are my favorites. The lead doesn't snap off all the time and I like the way the pencil feels in my hand. https://www.amazon.com/BIC-Xtra-Sparkle-Mechanical-Pencil-24-Count/dp/B0007L1VLO/ref=sr_1_31?crid=TE5GSHRRUPDX&keywords=bic.7mm&qid=1658454666&sprefix=bic%2B.7%2Caps%2C77&sr=8-31&th=
