wendyroo
Would anyone be willing to snap a couple picture inside Dolciani Prealgebra just to show me what a typical lesson layout looks like? On one hand, after a ton of research, I think Dolciani might be the best option for DS2's prealgebra. On the other hand, I have Dolciani Algebra 2, and I hate it, so I'm hesitant to spend $30 on prealgebra sight unseen. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!! mathnerd
I have the book but I am not at home right now. If you don't get a response, bump this thread up or PM and I will send you a snapshot of a chapter later today.
kirstenhill
Which year? I have a 1985 Dolciani pre algebra.
forty-two
Ours is copyrighted 1977 (Pre-Algebra: New Edition), so I don't know how it compares to newer editions, or which edition you are interested in, but I can snap a few pics once my dh is home and I can use his phone. What is it about Dolciani Alg 2 that you don't like? I have a 1965 edition of it, and on the surface the main difference between the two is that there's a bit more white space in the 1977 Pre-Alg. Otherwise it looks similar-ish at a glance. (I've taught the Pre-Alg book, but not the Alg 2.) I did really like the Dolciani Pre-Alg, though - nice, thorough, rigorous review of arithmetic from the ground up, exactly what my dd needed. Amazon says the one I am looking at is an '87. I'm sure the '85 is similar, so I would love to see a couple pictures.

My Dolciani Alg 2 is a '63 edition (and happens to be a teacher's edition, through the Amazon seller failed to mention that. 🙄) It is just so dense. I'm very comfortable with algebra 2 material, but I could barely make it through a page without glazing over in confusion because the sentences are convoluted and "monotone". It just never seems to get to the point!! When I looked at Foerster, it was like a breath of fresh air. Concise text, lots of white space around figures, definition boxes, clearly stated objectives for each section, etc.

I've never seen that notation. You generally need to write (-4) where I come from, unless the number is by itself and you skip the parentheses... See, I'm weird -- this looks awful to me 😛 . But all textbooks look awful to me, I think. I don't think anything else would look better.

Thanks. ISBN-10: 0395591236 This is 1992. All the Dolciani books went out of print this last year, so if you plan to use them, look for them now. I'm squirreling away all my sets, especially the solution guides. I also own the 1964 Dolciani books, and like the newer books for the layout. David-L
I'm late but for future reference. ---- 1985 version Pre-Algebra An Accelerated Course Dolciani, Sorgenfrey, Graham Student: 0-395-43050-X Teachers: 0-395-43051-8 Solutions Key: 0-395-35989-9 ----- 1977 version Pre-Algebra New Edition Dolciani, Wooton, Beckenbach, Chin, Feldmen, Markert Student: 0-395-29269-7 Teacher: 0-395-29270-0 ----- 1970 version Modern School Mathematics PRE-ALGEBRA Dolciani, Wooton, Beckenbach, Chin, Feldmen, Markert I own them but the 1970 versions have no ISBN. The teachers edition has the classic green teachers manual at the front. This edition has much more set theory and other "new math" features than the later editions. cintinative
I also have a copy of this if you need the ISBNs. I think mine is in the mid-80s range.

Holy guacamole- thank you for this comparison! Marking that one right off our list of possibilities for down the road. DS won’t even read DK books because they are visually overwhelming; no way he’d be able to maintain focus with that.
