maize
I've heard at least three different versions on the news today. How does Harris pronounce her own name? Not knowing is irking me.

mathnerd
Ka-mah-lah (Lotus flower in Sanskrit). Her sister's name is Maya which means Illusion or magic in Sanskrit.

Language differences inside india - Harris's mother is from the South were the "ah" sounds are elongated (and her name is spelled as Kamala) and people from the north who speak Hindi and related languages truncate the "ah" sounds often to spell it as Kamla (resulting in it sounding like Kumlah). Actually there are two different "ah" sounds in Hindi script. The long "ah" is shown as a letter, the short one is not represented by an alphabet, so you would see it spelled the equivalent of "kml" or "kmla" which is how I've seen it spelled in Hindi script. https://www.kidpaw.com/names/kamala But obviously it's for her to say how her name is pronounced. Guest
So glad to finally know this. I put great effort into learning to pronounce Buttigieg, but that was for naught. 3
