AmandaVT
Hello! I want to buy my dad a book and would love some suggestions. His birthday is coming up and I tend to buy him a book and a nice bottle of wine to celebrate. He prefers non-fiction and in the past, I've gotten him David McCullough books, a book on the seedy underworld of olive oil, a book on the Galveston Hurricane and the Outliers book. He likes: weather, history, bourbon, good cheeses, computers, science, gardening, golf. (that autocorrected to gold which I feel would have led to some funny replies!) 😂 Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
JenneinCA
This book about clouds has been on my to read list since January. It looks really cool. https://www.amazon.com/Cloudspotters-Guide-Science-History-Culture/dp/0399533451/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=cloudspotters+guide&qid=1552094282&s=gateway&sr=8-1 The Cloudspotters Guide: The science, history and culture of clouds by Gavin Pretor Pinney
happi duck
I love the book Neither Wolf Nor Dog: on forgotten roads with an Indian elder by Kent Nerburn. I know several men who love it too. There are two more related books also. This and To Kill a Mockingbird are my two favorite books. https://www.amazon.com/Neither-Wolf-nor-Dog-Forgotten/dp/1577312333?ref=silk_at_search
AmandaVT
Well, now I have both Hillbilly Elegy and the cloud book on my to-read list! Let's see, he's read 1776, Truman, the Johnstown Flood, The Wright Brothers, either the Great Bridge book or the one about the Panama Canal (I forgot which one I got him!). He also loves space stuff. He likes nothing to do with feelings or emotions generally. Or Art. Or religion.
happi duck
@AmandaVT. Neither Wolf Not Dog is moving...might knock it off the list.
Innisfree
The Dinosaur Hunters fills both science and history categories, and is a fascinating story with some interesting characters. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1857029631/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1552095793&sr=8-4 Maybe he'd enjoy one of Amy Stewart's books on plants. The Drunken Botanist hits both gardening and beverages, while Wicked Plants covers poisons. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1616200464/ref=dbs_a_w_dp_1616200464 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1565126831/ref=dbs_a_w_dp_1565126831

For him maybe, but it looks like a great book for me! 🙂 The Drunken Botanist looks like it could work for him for sure. Or my brother - actually. LLucy
I'm going to suggest Life on Air by David Attenborough. The print is very small, though, so we are listening to it -- 16 cds and read by Attenborough, too. Very well received at my house. I heard of it here at the WTM. Kareni
While it is fiction, Andy Weir's The Martian contains a lot of science. The book contains: weather, computers, science, and (potato) gardening. Regards, Kareni
Lizzie in Ma
How about a book by Nathaniel Philbrick if he enjoys McCoullough? My mom loves both authors. https://www.nathanielphilbrick.com/books/
purpleowl
Indirectly related to science - would he like Math with Bad Drawings?
