Chris in VA
I don't really want to spend $50 on a pad/cover, but...sigh. OK. What did you send with your kiddo?
Kassia
We just got inexpensive ones. I can't remember from where but they weren't even close to $50.
Kassia
I would probably get this: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2460196/the-big-one-essential-mattress-pad.jsp?prdPV=2

That's a great one -- the Twin XL (which is what MANY dorm mattresses are) is just $12 through July 8 when you use the coupon code at that link!
klmama
We bought a similar one from Wal-mart, as well as a foam pad to make the bed more comfortable. I'm sure we spent less than $50 for both.
Hoggirl
We had three pieces for the mattress. Base was a mattress encasement. This was a sort of a slicky/nylon, very thin fabric. It had a zipper and the mattress went completely inside of that. Like putting it in a ziplock bag. Second was a foam topper. Our came from Sam’s Club. Third was what I would call a traditional mattress pad. Kind of quilted on the top with elasticize sides. Because we had the foam topper, we didn’t get a thick/padded one. It’s purpose was basically to hold the foam topper in place.
mom1720
PSA -- check the school's regulations before buying a foam topper. DS's school doesn't allow them -- considered a fire risk/hazard. Kids get busted for them every year at the first fire drill.
Chris in VA
We ended up with The Big One Essential from Kohl's. We got a good pillow (Ralph Lauren) from Macy's for $6.99 also! I think she's all set, bed-wise.
