lynn
Will meat smoked with pecan wood and cherry and or oak wood cause a reaction? I know someone mentioned someone with a shell fish allergy could have issues with the steam in the air from steamed shrimp.
bluemongoose
If they are allergic to pecan I wouldn't do it....no. it isn't worth the risk.
Spryte
We use caution with smoked meats, and don’t consume meats smoked with a wood that is connected to an allergen. Pecan would be a no here, maybe the cherry. But - I don’t know. I just know we’ve spent way too much time in the ER to want to risk anything. It seems like the wood, smoked, would be ok. If the nuts are not being burned? Again, though, I don’t know and haven’t chanced it. I do know that there have been instances of people having anaphylaxis from rubber tree sawdust, if they are allergic to latex. And to tung oil, if they have nut allergies. So, it’s a risk we haven’t taken. More often, I worry about cross contamination - even with meats, especially deli meats. Just an aside, you probably know that. Lady Florida.
I wouldn't take the chance. We don't deal with them but a dear friend's daughter had a serious peanut allergy. They avoided all cross contamination, anything that said "may contain", and of course anything with actual nuts.. There was a sweet little girl on the outer edges of our homeschool community who died from eating a cross contaminated candy bar - one that said it was made in a facility that also processed nuts. It's not worth the risk. ETA - I speak in the past tense about our friend's daughter because she successfully completed OIT (oral immunotherapy). Edited March 10, 2018 by Lady Florida. ElizabethB
I don’t do well with anything smoked, I had no idea why until this post but now it makes sense! I am allergic to so many things I didn’t even try to figure out why... Edited March 10, 2018 by ElizabethB
almondbutterandjelly
Probably. Don't do it.
TravelingChris
AS a mother of a child who had incredibly severe citrus allergy (which is lessening now), inhalation of allergen is much worse than taking it orally. So citrus in the air was worse than her having a bite of citrus. I think this is true of many allergies so I would not risk it.
