Slache
My first grader has been borrowing my paperwhite at night since it's been getting dark earlier. I've never had him tested but he reads better than most adults I know. His favourites are Just So Stories, 50 Famous Stories Retold and Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know. He started Treasure Island but I think he's put off by chapter books. Of course maybe he wouldn't be if he didn't see how big they are in the kindle. Thanks! Slache
Are you asking about purchasing a Kindle? Or books for the Kindle? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Books. I should have put MOBI in the title instead of kindle. Sorry.
bwdiaz
This isn't cheap but the money I used on the Yesterday's Classics e-books bundle has been money well spent. My kids are asking for the second bundle from the grandparents for the holidays. Get on the email list for sale notices. I got the first bundle for $69 so the sale prices tend to be pretty good. http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/treasuries/index.php Does your library participate in overdrive? Checking out e-books would be completely free.

shawthorne44
You can absolutely do Overdrive on the Paperwhite. You can filter by books available on the Kindle. Vast majority are available in both epub and Kindle. A very few, usually ones with animation, are "Kindle with restrictions", i.e. Fire would work but not Paperwhite. But, before you check them out, you can see what formats are available. We recently finished the Captain Underpants books using the Kindle. All except one that wasn't available so I had to check out the physical books. Those silly page-turning animations sequences looked better on the Kindle because you could turn the pages so quickly. desertflower
Burgess books are usually free or a dollar. My kids love these books.
Hunter
Yesterday's Classics are beautifully formatted. I have the first set, and some of the second that I downloaded while I had a subscription. If you can afford it, YC is a wonderful thing to buy. I also have the Young Readers CD from Heritage History. There is quite a bit of overlap with YC, but still enough different books that it was worth it. http://www.heritage-history.com/?c=products&s=libraries You can use HH just for ideas and get the books free elsewhere. Look at the green titles. http://www.heritage-history.com/?c=library&s=genre Gutenberg books are almost always well formatted. http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Category:Children%27s_Bookshelf Australian Gutenberg has some books the American site doesn't. http://gutenberg.net.au/index.html This is another Australian site with beautiful books https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au Rosegate Harbour give suggestions and links to free eBooks http://users.gobigwest.com/rosegate/FreeBooks.html Has he read Peter and Polly in Winter? https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37837 Sunbonnet Babies or Overall Boys? http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/26626 Dutch Twins? http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/1216 The original 1924 Boxcar Children? http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/42796 Old Mother West Wind http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2557 Raggedy Anne http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/18190 The Wizard of Oz http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/43936 Bobbsey Twins http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17412 The Childhood of Rome http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36296 Edited October 25, 2017 by Hunter
Hunter
I'm not sure how to get any of these formats onto a Kindle, but there is Blinky Bill the koala bear here. It has been awhile since I skimmed it and down remember much. http://gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-n-z.html#wall

It won't allow you to reformat Overdrive books as those are DRM protected.
Misha
We are a home of multiple kindles and rely heavily on overdrive, gutenberg, and Prime reading.
