Arcadia
Husband and I have aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews in Australia. "Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788" http://www.australiaday.org.au/australia-day/about-our-national-day/
Melissa in Australia
I don't even remember it being celebrated until I was around 25. was I just not paying attention or is it only in the last 15 years that it has been made into a big thing to try and promote national pride?

Laz79
Always big here in Perth, but that is when we have our big fireworks display, rather than New Year's. I have noticed Anzac Day becoming bigger and bigger in recent years.
Rosie_0801
I have noticed Anzac Day becoming bigger and bigger in recent years. For similar reasons, I daresay.
abba12
Yeah, it's been a thing for as long as I can remember, but I'm a youngin'. I've heard from older relatives that it wasn't a widespread celebration until quite recently. Wikipedia tells me this It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and territories had adopted use of the term "Australia Day" to mark the date, and not until 1994 that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday on that day by all states and territories.[5]
Ausmumof3
Thank you in the spirit it was intended even if it is a little controversial here... Australia Day has always been big in Perth though the merchandise and commercialisation is new. Actually feeling a little sad right now. I have good memories of the sky show in Perth but tragically one of the stunt planes crashed and two people died this year 😢😢
