Um_2_4
what should we read next? They all 4 loved it. Right now we are doing Green Ember, but only 1 really loves it, rest are <shrug>. We are studying US History and have plenty of read aloud material there, so really looking just for literature choices. I think the quirkiness and suspense(?) of the story is what they liked. They also enjoyed: Centerburg Tales, Homer Price, any Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, etc.
Lori D.
Twenty One Balloons is unique… :) But I think each of these ideas perhaps has one similar aspect -- the inventions, the travel adventures, the humor, or the quirky aspect: Adventures of TinTin (Herge) The Great Wheel (Lawson) Ben and Me (Lawson) Mysterious Benedict Society (Stewart) By The Great Horn Spoon (Fleischman) The Toothpaste Millionair (Merrill) Hitty, Her First Hundred Years (Fields) Half Magic; Magic by the Lake; Knight's Castle; The Time Garden; Seven Day Magic (Eager) Five Children and It (Nesbit) The Reluctant Dragon (Grahame) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Carroll) The Hobbit (Tolkien) Edited August 3, 2016 by Lori D.
Chrysalis Academy
I like Lori's suggestions! For some reason James Thurber's The Thirteen Clocks comes to mind, too, and Around the World in 80 Days, which my kids really enjoyed a ton. And maybe The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle? Pippi Longstocking? This is just free association at this point . . .
Tanaqui
When I was a kid, I'm pretty sure I read The Pushcart War around the same time that I read The Twenty-One Balloons.
SanDiegoMom
I have never read 21 Balloons, but if you want quirky The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making is quirky! Lots of clever wordplay.

ALB
My kids around that time Also loved The Wheel on the School. It starts slowly but believe me they'll all warm up to it, and End up loving it! I LOVED this book! Almost as much as Twenty-One Balloons, which is probably my favorite that I've ever read to my kids.
LMD
We read swallows and Amazons at around the same time as 21 balloons, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
