OhioMomof3
Here are some books about geography that look interesting to me. I haven't read any of these, but I am making a list for our study of geography next year. I can't comment on any of these, because I've not researched any more than to make this list. I did purchase the Reader's Digest Must-See Places of the World for us to use in addition to reading about geography in our text and whichever of these books I end up choosing to use. Perhaps others will see this list and be able to comment on one or more titles. Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time On the Map: A Mind-Expanding Exploration of the Way the World Looks Africa: A Biography of a Continent Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies Don't Know Much about Geography: Everything You Need to Know about the World but Never Learned Full Circle (Michael Palin's personal travel journal; it was published to accompany his show, which "followed Palin's circular journey around 18 countries of the Pacific Rim.") The Fourth Part of the World: The Race to the Ends of the Earth Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks Geography for Dummies Why Geography Matters More Than Ever A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Bill Bryson) In a Sunburned Country (Bill Bryson) The Ghost Map Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us about Coming Conflicts and the Battle against Fate The Geography of Nowhere: The Rise and Decline of America's Man-made Landscape How to Lie with Maps
Corraleno
I'm currently reading Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World, and am really enjoying it. When we did American history, we read American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America, which was also really interesting and well-written. TCB
Probably not what you have in mind, but, Dervla Murphy is an Irish travel writer who has written books about riding a bike or mule etc through many different countries. Very interesting and a good way of learning about those countries. She gives a lot of interesting details about the places she is going through. She does have strong political views, if that's something you want to avoid.
