mom31257
We are considering going to NYC this summer as part of our vacation. We will most likely go to DC for a few days and then head there (driving). Can any of you give me good advice on where to stay so that we don't have to actually drive in NYC? How expensive is it to stay out and take transportation into the city? Edited March 29, 2016 by mom31257
madteaparty
Look into staying in Long Island City and taking the subway in. You'd have to pay for parking though
kewb
Coming up from DC I would stay in NJ. Near Secaucus so you can take the train in and out.

Alessandra
No specific recommendations, but be sure to check parking costs and figure those into your budget. Also, you probably want a one seat ride into NYC. Some locations have a train that goes into the city. In other locations, train or bus ends outside the city, so could have to take a PATH train as well as your first bus or train. Driving in the city may not be as bad as you think, if you use a garage directly off the west side highway and then go by public transportation. But I agree with you about not driving in city. Garage costs in central part of city can be horrendous. I don't know specific hotels, but Jersey City is vey close to lower Manhattan and has views of the city that are beyond spectacular. It's bustling and urban, as a lot of Wall Street corporations have built skyscrapers there. Edited March 29, 2016 by Alessandra
TammyinTN
We stayed on Staten Island at a military facility and took the free Staten Island ferry across daily. Parking at the municipal parking was $8 a day and we just walked everywhere. We logged 11 + miles walking one day. There is so much to see and do. We did New York Pass which gives you access to buses and makes for much less walking on our first trip. Loads of things were included with the ticket price. Tammy, We are just now doing some more research on our trip. Will parking be readily available to ride the ferry? We are looking at some hotels which have shuttles to the ferry, but we are concerned that will take a lot of time from our day. Thanks! TammyinTN
Amy. we went in the fall and spring and never had any issues with parking in the garages. Always spaces available in municipal parking either down at the pier (this was harder to get until you were there really early) or 1/2 a mile away--we did this 95% of the time. The ferry in the morning goes every 15 minutes until 10am..then every 1/2 hour...we never waited long and its a great ride across to Manhattan....we looked forward to it each day. It's also Free :)
