PrincessMommy
I have a sealed shrink-wrapped package of vegan "sausages" made by Lightlife. They've never been opened but the sell-by date is Jan.2016. Would you use it?
MEmama
Are they frozen? If so, definitely. If they are refrigerated, how do they smell and look? I'd eat them if they passed those tests--you are going to cook them, after all. Those things tend to be loaded with sodium and preservatives. (Not judging--I eat them too)
PrincessMommy
I plan to slice and sautee them. They were only refrigerated.
Mom22ns
I plan to slice and sautee them. They were only refrigerated. Hmm... I'd smell test them and if they seem ok I'd eat them. However, that is a long time past a use by date for a refrigerated item. It is iffy.
UCF612
I wouldn't but I'm extremely cautious when it comes to sell by dates. I wouldn't eat it if it was an early March date.
Cinder
I wouldn't have but am now wondering if you did. :bigear:
PrincessMommy
I wouldn't have but am now wondering if you did. :bigear: LOL - We did eat it. It was fine and 3hrs later no one is sick.

gaillardia
LOL - We did eat it. It was fine and 3hrs later no one is sick. I hope you are all still not sick. You said 3 hours...I've had medical people tell me (know-it-all nurses, etc. {not that all nurses are like that}) that it takes at least 24 hours for bad food to have an effect on your digestive system. I say PATOOEY. So, PrincessMommy, when you've gotten sick from food before, has it happened fairly quick...say, within 3 hours? Because when we eat at some places that everyone else raves about, we sometimes barely make it home (half hour to an hour) before we need to evacuate. Sorry. But that's the truth. Maybe it's that the food isn't bad that we eat, but it is too high in fat. Opinions?
PrincessMommy
I don't know. Usually when I've eaten bad food, or food that doesn't agree with me, it's a pretty quick reaction - within a hours. I think if the item hadn't been in vacuum sealed packaging I would not have been as inclined to eat it. We're still fine, BTW.
Ravin
I would have eaten it unless they smelled off.
Guest
Because sausages are a cured product I'm okay with looser timing on sell by dates if they've been stored well and don't smell or taste whangy.
