So, I still haven't bought TWTM. I've gotten it from the library a few times, but haven't actually purchased yet. And it's in high demand, so I can't get it right now. ;) I wanted to get some classic books for the children to listen to. I was going to get the Chronicles of Narnia, but DH said he wanted to read that to them. So, any other ideas? What are some good books to get for them? Thanks!

Off the top of my head, we've enjoyed:

Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner read by Peter Dennis (Blackstone)

Tale of Despereaux

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table read by Sean Bean (Naxos)

Our Island Story (Naxos)

My littlest ones have enjoyed The Frances Audio Collection and Mouse Tales.

Peter Dennis reading Winnie the Pooh has been listened to every day for 7 years at our house :-)

Also,

The Wind in the Willows

Farmer Boy - or any of the Little House series

Dr. Dolittle

Anything read by Jim Weiss (sp?)

Just So Stories

The Tales of Beatrix Potter

Classical Kids series - Beethoven Lives Upstairs etc.

We also spend a lot of time listening to BBC 7 - Big Toe Books which you can get online. They read children's stories on the radio. Awesome.

I try to find books on audio that are tough reads ie pronunciation maybe difficult for me to do. So, I search the library's audios for books that are really long like Robinson Crusoe or they have difficult words to pronounce in the book. I use that gage sometimes not always. I want the children to get the correct pronunciation so that they are hearing it.

My library has: Robinson Crusoe, unabridged

Swiss Family Robinson, unabridged

The Wind and the Willow, unabridged

Alice in Wonderland

Alice through the looking glass

The Hobbit

Those are just a few that I have done on audio for them.

Blessings in your homeschooling journey!

Sincerely,

Karen

I'd just go to your library and see what audio books they have on their shelves. Use what's available for free.

Yes, and I used to go to different branches because each one had a different selection. (when I didn't know specifically what I was looking for)

E. Nesbit books

Anne of Green Gables series

This year my dd is going to listen to:

Scarlet Letter

Uncle Tom's Cabin

and To Kill a Mockingbird

ETA: sorry, I just saw the ages of your dc, obviously my dd's list won't apply right now. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! Our library is small and doesn't have much at all, but we have a great interlibrary loan program. So I can get most anything, but I have to be able to look it up on the computer and put it on hold, not browse a shelf. When I looked in the audiobook section of the website, I got over a few thousand pages, so I needed a way to narrow it down! This'll give me a place to start. Thanks! All 3 of them love listening to things, so I want to feed that. :D

My one rule (for me) is that audio books need to be unabridged. My dd7 can read abridged versions, but if she is listening, I prefer to have the "real" thing.

My kids all love the Magic Tree House books.

Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web.

Mary Poppins

Tom Sawyer

Peter Pan

Look at the library.

If you have an mp3 player, you can download books from a lot of libraries - some you can burn onto a cd. Just browse the children's fiction/literature catergories.
