Sigh. Jane Austen used singular they. Mark Twain used singular they. Shakespeare used singular they. That sentence is perfectly correct grammatically, although it may be stylistically inappropriate in some contexts. Those contexts do not include internet comments (which you should NEVER read).

 

(Also, it's always grammatically correct to start sentences with conjunctions, and punctuation != grammar.)

 

Of course, the argument is ridiculous. If the average parent cannot teach the same subjects they were required to learn as students (as though most homeschooled high schoolers get all their teaching strictly from their parents to begin with), then doesn't that imply that our school system really is atrocious?
