What color shoes....

Ok, Fashionista Hive...

We have a wedding coming up and Joy needs new shoes...again. Her dress is a lovely blush-peach (I don't know how to describe it!) with just a smidge of pink undertone. It's knee-length with fabric rosettes all over. It looks beautiful on her, but we are at a loss for shoes.

We would like something that is comfortable and easy to wear with other things, but I have no clue what color would be best.

She has very narrow feet and needs a Mary Jane style because everything else flips right off her foot. All of the lovely shoes we have encountered are either not Mary Jane style or they have high heels. She is comfortable with a small heel, but nothing over 2".

The fun part is that she needs a size 10. Oh, and we are on a budget, so $50 is the limit.

I guess the most important question is what color(s) would work well?

The photo is a tad shadowy, so the color is a bit lighter.

nude/taupe.   goes with everything.  ballet flats?

I bought shoes from amazon - bought/tried-on/returned/etc. (I actually bought several pair, with plans to keep what fit and send the rest back.  my foot is hard to fit and I wasn't finding anything - not even at Nordstrom)  finally got some that worked. . . . then I ended up wearing sheepskin slippers because I had a fever of 102.  (glad my dress was long . . . )

Gold would work.  Peacock would be lovely.  Olive might work.

If you want to expand your colour options considerably, you can use leather paint to make those black shoes (because they often come in black) be whatever colour you want!

In that vein, if she's hard to fit, you might find some success looking at a dance store for character shoes with a low heel.

6pm.com is also your friend--it's zappos' clearance site, I believe.

So, here are a couple of narrow shoes--it's one of the reasons I love 6pm, because you can search *by width*!

http://www.6pm.com/naturalizer-referee-black-leather (paint them.)

http://www.6pm.com/aravon-maura-red-brown-leather(you could leave them red-brown if you wish, or paint them.)

http://www.6pm.com/softspots-sable-jewel-red-claret(colour fine as-is, probably.)

Thank you so much for this! I had never heard of that site, although I have spent several hours on Zappos.

We loved the last pair you linked. I ordered them and am praying that the 10 narrow will be a perfect fit. It was the last pair in stock, so I had to act fast!

I am still looking for a backup pair, just in case those don't work out.

Thank you!!!!!

PS. I had no clue there was such a thing as leather paint. I will definitely be looking into it!

I second the dance store recommendation. Dance shoes are comfortable, secure, and come in neutral shades. My favorite shoes for weddings are ballroom heels, but you can only wear them indoors.

I've never ordered from this site, but the sale prices are good. http://www.lightinthebox.com/narrow/ballroom_v29551t0/dance-shoes_c1278?currency=USD&litb_from=paid_adwords_search&adword_mt=b&adword_ct=37746910299&adword_kw=dance%20shoes%20%2Bballroom&adword_pos=1t2&adword_pl=&adword_net=g&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=2079757027_160860099_9365941899_kwd-24793043637&gclid=Cj0KEQjwsb-vBRCLj7TvqpGx_MoBEiQALgFGnnCgvjwt6ZY4NT22HF-fZpREuY8xLuebq86N23qtbBcaAjxI8P8HAQ

LOL  Good choice.  I was seriously considering them once I saw them, and I'm a size 10 too.  ;)

If you want to investigate leather paint, it's Angelus brand.  Dharma trading carries it, though I think a couple of other places are cheaper.  And if anyone in your family is crafty, you can get some VERY artiistic shoes happening!

I tried the dance wear solutions site, but they don't have Joy's size in stock. I was hoping to try a pair of beige for her. It says to go a half size up, so that would put her in a 10.5 narrow, which they don't carry. Bummer.

The first site you linked looked like it was outside of the continental USA, and I doubt they could get here in time. They had some fun styles, though!

Thank you so much for your help!

I knew there was a reason I snapped them up right away!

Thanks for the info on the leather paints. I was going to place an order with Dharma Trading in the near future, so I will look into it then.

Stupid question...is nude only nude for vanilla people? Joy is AA, so would nude even work?!

That's a big complaint in the fashion world. Valid complaint! If the shoes are lighter than her skin tone, it will draw more attention to them. Like wearing bright white shoes for a vanilla (cute!) person. Well, maybe not me because I'm almost ghostly pale anyway. Maybe a chocolate patent MJ shoe? I think gold or silver would be pretty too. Strappy sandals or does she need closed shoes? I have a wide front and narrow heel and look for sandals or slingbacks for dressy shoes.

I was just Googling that question and chuckling at the best images they could come up with for nude shoes for women of color. What a joke!

I haven't put her in white shoes since she was about six years old and she wanted them to go with her Easter dress. I usually stick with brown, black, or various colorful hues. Her skin tone is very difficult to describe because it varies, depending on which part we're talking about. Her face is a warm chestnut brown, but her legs are a cooler shade with bluish undertones.

I am looking for gold shoes now (the dress is has warm undertones, so silver is out), but I am really, really hoping the other wine colored ones work out.

She prefers closed toes. I love sling backs, but her feet never stay in them properly.

Thanks, zoobie!

Nude, taupe, or black patent would be good options.

ETA:  the problem seems to be finding mary janes in any color other than black for that price.

Here's a pair that fit the bill, though aren't the prettiest:  http://www.payless.com/womens-lexi-mary-jane/74522.html?dwvar_74522_color=black#q=mary+janes&prefn1=gender&prefn2=size&prefv1=Women&prefv2=10&start=1

Oops, now I read the rest of the thread & see she's AA.  The idea with nude is to more or less blend with skin tone so the shoes aren't a focus.

Other options:

Brown t-straps:  http://www.amazon.com/Beacon-AMK1604500610M-Angel-Steps-Casey/dp/B00L9YEU3E/ref=sr_1_25?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1441854092&sr=1-25&nodeID=679399011&keywords=mary+janes+women+shoes+flats&refinements=p_n_size_browse-vebin%3A1285113011%2Cp_36%3A2661612011%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391080011&psc=1

light brown nubuck: http://www.amazon.com/Bella-Marie-Stacy-33-squeaky-dancing/dp/B0112ZRRPM/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1441854092&sr=1-1&nodeID=679399011&keywords=mary+janes+women+shoes+flats&refinements=p_n_size_browse-vebin%3A1285113011%2Cp_36%3A2661612011%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391080011&psc=1

Dark brown crocks "work flats" http://www.amazon.com/Crocs-Womens-Alice-Mary-Espresso/dp/B003V0SKVC/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1441854092&sr=1-4&nodeID=679399011&keywords=mary+janes+women+shoes+flats&refinements=p_n_size_browse-vebin%3A1285113011%2Cp_36%3A2661612011%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391080011&psc=1 (not the prettiest option, but I bet the most comfortable for a long night of dancing).

Medium brown double straps: http://www.amazon.com/BELLAMARIE-JOYCE-1-Womens-Double-Adjustable/dp/B00YA0KIX0/ref=sr_1_15?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1441854092&sr=1-15&nodeID=679399011&keywords=mary+janes+women+shoes+flats&refinements=p_n_size_browse-vebin%3A1285113011%2Cp_36%3A2661612011%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391080011&psc=1

Medium brown strappy ballerina: http://www.amazon.com/V-Luxury-31-BETTY5-Strappy-Ballerina-Leather/dp/B00XDZU112/ref=sr_1_22?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1441854092&sr=1-22&nodeID=679399011&keywords=mary+janes+women+shoes+flats&refinements=p_n_size_browse-vebin%3A1285113011%2Cp_36%3A2661612011%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391080011&psc=1

Hope that helps.
