Does anyone have this carpet cleaner?

Since it would pay for itself after a couple of uses, I'm considering getting this carpet cleaner and wondered if anyone had it or a similar one?  Do you find that it's pretty useful?  We'll be moving a bunch of rooms around this summer, but since we want to paint them too, it might take a few days or weeks, which makes renting a carpet cleaner machine not cost effective.

This is the one I'm considering:

But then there is also this one, which cleans hard floors too.  Anyone have one of those, and does it really work?  Is it easier, or more convenient, than a twisty mop?  We have hard floors on our main floor (pergo and linoleum, plus a couple of rooms with old hardwood, and one with a rug on it, plus carpet upstairs), and with five children and country living, it's hard to keep our floors clean.  I'm wondering if the extra money would be worth it for the convenience of cleaning the hard floors (especially at the refurbished/open box price), or if it's really not any more convenient than a twisty mop?  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045I8E4M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2L77EE7U53NWQ

I have the first one. It's the best carpet cleaner I've owned. I especially love that it comes apart so that you can clean out all the grossness after use. I've only used it for sucking up potty accidents and sickness, not a full on cleaning with carpet cleaner. I plan to try that in my family room soon, though.

(Regarding cost, we sprinkle baking soda on the floors, and put hot (super hot!) water + vinegar into the machine instead of using the $30-bottle of carpet shampoo. Works like a charm. Carpets smell like vinegar afterward, but only until they are dry. The carpet cleaning machine has paid for itself many times over.)

I bought this Hoover last week when the price dropped below $100. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R66F?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 Used it in a couple rooms and think it's amazing, even for old stains. Mary Hunt recommended it in her Everyday Cheapskate column, along with a recommendation to use it with no soap and to heat the water to boiling.

My sister has the second. She says she really loves it.

Don't get the second one. All those spinning brushes are geared together and driven by a single peg on one brush that fits into the motor. That peg is plastic. The machine works great until that peg breaks, then it's $30 to replace it. Eventually, the peg breaks and gets stuck in the machine. I guess I should t complain. It lasted eight years. However, if they'd only used a metal peg :-(

My new machine was less than $100 at Ollie's. It has rotating brushes and cleans like a dream. Hope it lasts longer than the last one.

Well, after thinking and reading a bit more, I decided to order this one, and it should be here in a couple of days. The reviews on the multi-floor one that does hard floors too were too mixed for my liking, not definitive enough to spend the extra money on it.

Thanks, Hive!

Nooooooo! Not the spinning brushes! Did you read my warning? Hopefully they addressed the design flaw. My machine was comparatively old. You could probably find out if they use a plastic pin by downloading a user's manual.

Heres a photo of the replacement part: http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Terrain-Steam-Brush-Brush/dp/B005O58EF4/ref=pd_sbs_328_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1YDPJMQHZQTFTXS0XY3D

That plastic pin isn't that tough. I went through 3 or 4. They're $30 a pop.
