Summer camps-educational

Recommended Posts

We are very rural and any camps are very far away and more for adventure.  That's great, too, but I was  hoping to find an educational type summer boarding school or camp for my 14 year old.

It can be art, history, languages, really anything.  More to give her an intensive learning experience away from home than anything.

Preferably in the Midwest, South, or East of the USA, and affordable or with financial aid available? Money is tight but I'd like to do something for her.

Does anyone know of anything like this?

Our local university offers boarding camp with an educational focus (and scholarships are available). Perhaps see if this is an option at universities in your "neighborhood"? We are in the Midwest. The focus changes from year-to-year, I think.

There are language camps at Concordia, in Wisconsin. There is also an exchange program that world with homeschoolers, but that would be out of the country.

Perhaps some searches including area of interest would give some more options.

If she is likely to be eligible for talent search, the different programs have a lot of educational residential options available. My DD has gotten a lot of flyers for programs, and while most for her age are day only, at high school there are a lot of boarding options, and most have scholarships available.

Most of the ones I have found so far (residential) are between $7-15,000, and that's so far out of budget that I'd have more luck with the lottery.  I did find a sports camp an hour away for one week.  $500 for one week.    But I'll check into it as a last resort.  And many academic ones I am finding also request referrals, recommendations, and records from the schools, so I'm not sure if I'll find any friendly to homeschoolers.

We're in the Midwest and $500 to $600+ per week is pretty standard for a sleep away camp. What price range are you hoping for?

Would you consider performing arts/music camps?

Yes, she's a Suzuki violinist.

I guess I'm just remembering back to the prices of a decade ago.  Financial aid would be nice, too, but many places don't have scholarships or anything.  And $500 is way too much for a sports camp she wouldn't even be interested in. ;)  Girl Scout Camps and a Catholic Camp I'm ok with are about half of that for much more offered, but I'd like something more educational than adventurous, kwim?
