ProudGrandma
Are you nervous to leave it alone while you travel for the holidays? I mean...it dries out...and is a fire hazard...Yes? Or is it really not any more of a fire hazard as anything else?? We will be gone for about 10 days...and it won't get watered...by then it will probably stop drinking water anyway. Pawz4me
I wouldn't worry as long as the lights were unplugged and there was no heat source anywhere around.
Chris in VA
It's not like it's going to spontaneously combust. It's no more dangerous than a stack of papers on your desk. But yes, agreeing you need to unplug the lights and not have it near a heater.
PrincessMommy
Agreeing with Pawz and Chris. it should be fine if it's unplugged.... but why not pull it down now and take it outside? I'm thinking of the mess it will make if you wait to do it until after you get home.
Cindy in FL.
I don't think it would be a problem, but I would probably go ahead and take it down before you go away.
Sara in AZ
For years we used to go away for 8-10 days at Christmas. I always unplugged the tree and left it. My friends would always worry that our house would burn down. But it didn't. Coming home to a dead tree is kind of depressing, though. fairfarmhand
Unplug and it will be fine. This goes for anytime you are out of the house at Christmas though. If you leave the house, unplug the tree. Period. Inspect your strands of Christmas lights for damage before using them and your extension cords. Never erect a tree next to a heat source (heater, fireplace, candles etc.) Says the person who's been writing blog posts for home insurance companies for 3 weeks. Anything else you need to know about Christmas safety? :)
