Ginevra
This is a strange issue that has been cropping up for me. I am having frequent "frog-in-the-throat" episodes that don't seem connected to anything. I drink water constantly, so it isn't dryness per se; it just turns gravelly to where I'm clearing and drinking to try and speak normally. Is this an allergy symptom? Any insight? Kebo
Sounds like spasmodic dysphonia ... http://www.dysphonia.org/symptoms.php
EKS
Reflux can cause it. Or so I have heard.
Guest
Hmmm. I don't think it is either of those. I don't have reflux and it's not really a "tight" voice, it just turns gravelly.
Kebo
Reflux can present different ways ... http://www.enttx.com/general-medical/why-postnasal-drip-is-not-always-caused-by-postnasal-drip Or perhaps allergies/post nasal drip alone would be enough
hornblower
for me, allergies cause that. Before I was vegan, dairy triggered that. Now it's just seasonal allergies.

Nobody's sticking a camera into my throat from my nose. ;) That does make sense, though.
Laura Corin
I had the camera thing done. I have changed my diet and my throat is much better.
Ellie
Allergies/post nasal drip; tea; dairy. Clearing your throat is also bad for your vocal chords. When you feel the need to do that, cough instead.
Kebo
Oh, it's not so bad -- I've had it done 3 times since December. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.
plansrme
You could try an OTC for acid reflux and see if it helps. I tried that when I noticed my voice changing, and it not only set my voice right but also nearly eliminated a slight cough I have had forever (years). I have never had whatever the typical signs of reflux are--no pain or discomfort, for instance.
