Dressed up in some wild approximation of black tie - kilts, frock coats (Calvin), granddad's vintage purple velvet smoking jacket (head boy), short dresses, long dresses, dresses with trains, and the headmaster's wife in full cleavage. No dates. All the teenagers drinking (legal with food here). Dancing to a swing band - the head boy guest-crooning. Then the same band playing Scottish country dances. Having long talks with the recent-theology-PhD-pastor father of one of Calvin's friends, and he told a penis* joke within two minutes of acquaintance. Auld Lang Syne at 12.30. Brilliant. L *It was about a speaker at a conference, just after everyone had been Myers-Briggs tested, innocently announcing that he was going to express his 'P-ness', to the hilarity of the audience. We have set up a variety of things for him to do over this month - my mum is staying next week, so he will have her to think about and look after. Sounds like a wonderful occasion.
