dhudson
My ds and his friend have created a working knitted piano using Scratch to program it. They will present their project at the Scratch Conference at MIT in August. It is amazing what happens when kids can follow their interests. Check out their video! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dnIhUCqBARc

ValRN
Great! DD currently takes a free Scratch programming course with Virtual Homeschool Group. All of their courses are free. I would not use them for high school (or late middle school for that matter), but they are great for having a student get used to an online format, be accountable to someone else, etc. We don't use their courses for academic content or rigor; we use them more as a supplement to learning certain skills. The Scratch course is very basic and NOT rigorous at all...probably best for elementary and early middle school grades.
dhudson
My ds has helped to develop the High School/College step up from Scratch called, SNAP! http://snap.berkeley.edu I would agree that Scratch isn't High School prep for Comp Sci but it teaches a lot of Comp Sci basics and gets kids interested in programming. He and his friend will be doing a Summer Programming Camp using Scratch in inner city LA this summer. For more rigorous Comp Sci, try Code Academy as well.
