SKL
My kids are in 2nd grade and they need a dictionary that has more than 1000 words, LOL. ;) Which one do you guys like best?
Kareni
My kids are in 2nd grade and they need a dictionary that has more than 1000 words, LOL. ;) We had one like this when my daughter was in elementary school ~ DK Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary. You can see a good sample by using the look inside feature. ETA: And consider this book just for the fun of it ~ Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms by Marvin Terban. Rai B.
When dd was in 2nd, I got the American Heritage Children's Dictionary. http://www.hmhco.com/shop/books/the-american-heritage-childrens-dictionary/9780547659558
Starr
I don't recommend following my footsteps. I bought their first dictionaries in Canada. :D Eventually the spelling books and dictionary didn't match up. It was a funny, fail.
Arcadia
My kids used for school workWebster New World children's dictionary 2nd revised editionhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0471786888Macmillan Dictionary for Childrenhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1416939598American Heritage Student Thesaurushttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0547659164Their language arts school work include use of a thesaurus so I let them buy one. Should have used the library copy as the thesaurus gets little use so far.For their leisure reading, they use the dictionaries I already owned as the children's dictionary runs out of words. I like the Oxford ones for the normal dictionaries.
Crimson Wife
DS is using "American Heritage Children's Dictionary". Oldest DD has always had an advanced vocabulary, so she used "Webster's American Family Dictionary", which is a sanitized collegiate dictionary. Juliegmom
ETA: And consider this book just for the fun of it ~ Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms by Marvin TerbanOh the temptation to purchase another book! This does look like a fun book. ...we also use the DK Merriam-Webster Childrens Dictionary that Kareni suggested.
SKL
I bought the Scholastic one and the Miriam-Webster one last night. They seem like they will suit the purpose until we need a grown-up dictionary (or until they figure out that it's a lot easier to look words up online, LOL).
