Oh, NO! The bird isn't dead.

Recommended Posts

I thought it was dead last night, and when I let the dogs out this morning, they showed me (ugh!) it's still breathing.

Do I have to kill it? I've never killed anything before (besides insects). I can't keep the dogs inside all day. What should I do? It is badly hurt. I can't believe it's still breathing.

Moan . . .

Well, I hate to kill things besides snakes, but I did kill a pet rabbit once that was suffering. I must have missed your post, what kind of bird?

ETA- Okay, I found it. It's hard, and it just makes you sick, doesn't it? I don't think I could kill it, I'd just put it where the dogs couldn't get it?

...if you can manage to get it in a quiet, safe place where it can recover. We saw this happen last year. Birds can be resilient if given enough time. We got a shallow box, lined it with soft fluffy stuff, and placed the poor birdie in there. Then we put it on a table, under a tree where critters could not bother it. The next day it fluttered away. :) I know you don't want it to suffer, but perhaps it will be alright after all.

You could try something like that for a day or two but if it is still injured after 48hrs. I would put it out of its misery. Drowning or wringing the neck works, but not for someone squeamish. Do you have a dh who would do it for you?

Or you could take it to an area wildlife rehab. Or call the DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources)

I had to do this with a baby bird that fell out of the nest and had an obviously broken wing. My kids were frantic, the bird was staggering around with its open wing dragging on the ground - I had to yell at the kids to make them go inside so I could scoop up the bird in a bag and fling it hard against the wall to kill it fast. I could NOT just let it suffer - but I HATED doing it. And I was not about to make one of the kids do it!!! One of those moments when it was a pain to have to be the adult!

Go put the bird out of its misery.

and it was already covered with flies. It had just died.

I'm relieved I didn't have to do it, but I had deteremined to take care of it before the dc ventured out this morning. I don't want them traumatized like I am!

Thanks for all the encouragement!
