I have my first *curly girl* appt.

Dh and I are visiting the city this weekend and I made an appt for Sat. I'm so excited and nervous. I looked up reviews online and she is supposed to be really great. I hope she can give my poor hair a boost and perhaps has some decent styling products there. I'd love some gel to define the curls without weighing them down while controlling the frizz. I've had no luck so far.

I hope to have a positive experience as well. I do like my regular stylist but as my hair has gotten curlier I don't think she has the curly hair experience. I've asked for a few recs for products and she doesn't have anything that has worked for me at all. She was going on and on last time about my hair being dry but I finally figured out I'm fighting frizz. If I don't take care of my hair right it just frizzes out, it is not really dry hair but my texture is just different now. I hope that I can just visit her a few times a year if it works out well.

Jennifer I hope you are right! I did have nice wonderfully wavy hair but it keeps getting curlier with the hormones I guess. I just don't even know what to do with it anymore. It looks great when I let it air dry but the curls start losing their spunk and I don't know what to do with the less curly portions. My next day hair is frizzy in some spots and oily in others, whereas it used to look the best then. I'm going to try and remember to take pics. I'm not up for a face shot but perhaps I'll be brave enough for a hair shot :) I should take a before pic today it is an awful friz and dry mess!

I'm really out of it and must be hiding under a rock. I read the CG book years ago. Tried the no-poo approach. At first, it was fine. Then it was just awful. Until this thread, I didn't even know that there's such a thing as a CG stylist/specialist.

My hair is not curly, just lots of frizz which is increasing as I get older.

I did a Brazilian blow out/keratin treatment a few times. Absolutely loved it. Won't to it again because of all the formaldehyde.

Now I have my hair relaxed about once a year. It helps, but is not as good as the keratin.

I tried Lush Henna for the first time a month ago. It's really helped with the texture and shine.

While I think my stylist is good, she's not great. She straightens her hair. I'd like to see her actually live with her curls.

Things she does tells me she doesn't understand curly hair. For one, it is not styled best when it is partially dry after sitting there getting it cut. Curly hair should be wet when product is applied and when drying with a diffuser starts. So, I always wash my hair again when I get home and start fresh. I also don't like that she uses a brush to comb my hair when it's wet. Third, I find my products superior to hers.

What I really want is someone who gives a great cut. Let me deal with the styling and products. I like having small strands around the front to hang down when I pin it back. Personally, I think it would look better if there were more uneven chunks of hair, but I cannot get her to understand this.

Dawn - is yours a CG stylist???  Because there are a number of things that she is doing that are a no-no for CG!!!  First, don't brush!!!!  Yikes!  Second, my hair is always trimmed when dry.  She needs to see how it sits and where EACH curl goes before she cuts it.

If you don't have a CG stylist, look one up!  Mine is wonderful.  Her hair is beautifully curly.  She has a blog post where she tells her Curly Girl story.  She hated her hair until she learned to work with it instead of against it.  I love her!!!!

I have always loved your hair Dawn!!!!

Thank you. I feel the same way about cutting when dry. I have tried numerous times to find a stylist on the CG website, and I found her recommended there. Am I looking in the wrong place?

My last stylist didnt even condition my hair. Sometimes I feel like saying, "Step aside while I do your job."

I'm back. My stylist was wonderful, she definitely knew what she was doing plus she went over the entire technique with me in great detail. She did the dry cut, cutting each individual curl. She then did the no poo, combed it and put in the deva curl gel. She then pinned my hair up at the base so it would dry well. Next I sat under the big diffuser and after it was dry she did some touch up cutting. We forgot to bring the camera so I'll have to have dh take a pic. My hair is about the same curliness in the back, but curlier in the front and no frizz!!!!! My hair is a boticelli curl, according to her. ONly 2 small complaints, she parted my hair a little bit off and I need to take back the no-poo and one-conditioner as it has wheat in it :(

I'm happy it worked out for you.

I just spent a nice chunk of change on a curly girl haircut. Yeah. Not impressed. At all. She cut my hair like any other regular stylist. Couldn't tell me a thing about my hair properties. Also, she couldn't recommend one single product for me since I can't/won't use gluten. It was a huge waste of money. Very very disappointed.

She came highly recommended on the naturally curly site.

I'll go back to my regular stylist who actually does cut dry. I'll just tell her not to straighten it.

Oh no! That is horrible. Ya know, one of the things I detest about hairdressers is that they always look down at the products I use (though they have never tried them), and then try to sell me expensive stuff. I buy it. It works no better -- sometimes worse -- than what I use.

Not really pertaining to your post, but your post reminded me of something I had wanted to say earlier.

I'm happy it worked out for you.

Oh, man that stinks. I'm on the look out now for some safe products, have you found anything recommended yet? I think the gel is ok but I need to double check. I don't know why I didn't even think to ask. I just don't usually go to a salon. Now, I'm feeling stuck. I don't know what to do w/ my hair. I don't want to put anything on it to mess it up but I want to keep it moisturized.

Right now I'm using Suave Naturals or Tresemme Naturals conditioners. Neither of the kind I have have gluten in them. I also use Everyday Shea Moisturizing Shampoo. It's sulfate free. It's works fine, but I don't know if there's something better out there as I can't afford to just keep randomly buying stuff to use it. As for gel I heard on the naturally curly site that lots of people like (love) LA Looks gel. I bought a small travel size bottle of it. I've only used it once. It seems fine too. It didn't leave my hair crunchy.

I still have frizz though so I can't help there. I live in serious humidity.

Thanks for the info KH, my poor dh just spent an hr looking for gf products for me, so hopefully I can wash my hair tonight! I doublechecked the gel and it has wheat as well :( I'm really hoping the cheaper products do ok for me. I'm really disappointed as the deva curl products worked so well.

I'm not sure about wheat, but these are the things I love.

Washing hair: any sulfate-free shampoo, or a little baking soda, or right now I'm using African Black Soap for my hair, face and body (peppermint). I think I paid $9.99 at Whole Foods

http://www.amazon.com/Alaffia-African-Black-Types-Peppermint/dp/B007S0CM2Y/ref=sr_1_15?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1376352433&sr=1-15&keywords=Black+Africa+soap

Conditioner. Nothing ever beats Aussie Moist and Aussie 3-Minute Miracle for me

Out of shower:

Sebastian Potion 9 (moisturizing and frizz-fighting)

Either L'Oreal Melting Gel or Sally Beauty Salon's Noodlehead Curling Creme (latter more in the summer)

Sometimes I'll spray Fructis Garnier "strong" anti-humidity spray when dry or nearly dry

Thanks Dawn. Dh found the Sauve Naturals and Tresemme Naturals but no sulfate free shampoo. He bought me some that said sulfate free but the 2nd ingredient was some sodium laureyl sulfate derivative, as was the 3rd ingredient. UGH! I'm going to try to make it to town today but trying to read 500 labels while wrangling 4 kids is not my idea of fun.

Organix is not sulfate free. It's hard to find one at a regular store. I believe some people on the hair forum use L'Oreal sulfate free shampoos. I haven't read the ingredients so I'm not sure if it still has a sulfate derivative.

Let's see I bought Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo at CVS and that's sulfate free. I think.

There are some shampoos from Say Yes to Carrots, Say Yes to Blueberries, Say Yes to Cucumbers that I've heard are sulfate free. I've seen those at Target.

Also, Shea Moisture line has sulfate free shampoos. I saw those at Sally Beauty Supply, Target, and CVS.

Nature's Gate has some sulfate free shampoos. Also at Target and of course health food stores.

It says sulfate free. I've bought itat Kroger, Walgreens, Target. Those are regular stores where I live, but I don't live in a rural community.

I've used the L'Oreal one as well, but there are so many other chemicals that I prefer one with fewer. That's why I am happiest with baking soda or the African Black Soap right now. My other hair products have enough chemicals in them.

It has Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate

A derivative of sulfate. At least according to the articles I've read about sulfates on naturally curly site. Of course it's up to you if that matters or not. :)

It's hard to find stuff without harsh chemicals and not spend a small fortune.

I know nothing of this chemical. By being a derivative, is it also harsh?

This is what I'm using now. Anything harsh in it?

It's a huge bottle, and you don't need much. I use it on hair, face and body.

It would be nice if this was easier. I wish I knew if the L'Oreal "sulfate" free would work for me. All I know is the No Poo worked really well for me and although it hasn't bothered me much(other than some itching) I think it would be a very bad idea for long term. I'm still planning to try and make it in this afternoon to see if I can find something safer. I'm pretty sure I've seen some Kiss My Face products at the local Walgreens. I can check the health food store as well. It is crazy though that I'm afraid to wash my hair :(

soror - thanks for posting this thread! I'd been toying with the idea of switching up my routine a bit because my hair was getting frizzier, so this inspired me! I'm not due for a haircut, but I switched out my products and it has done wonders already! I am using Dr. Bronner's as my shampoo (barely has any ingredients!), a VO5 conditioner (may end up swapping that out as it is really light), and straight coconut oil as a deep conditioner and a touch of it for styling.

So you wash your hair with the liquid soaps? Almond sounds nice. :)

I never did use them on my hair when I was using them, but the African Black Soap I use now is similar, so I'm sure you could. I just like the minimal ingredients and the fact that they can be used all over the face and body.

The one I use now also helps alleviate financial difficulties in West Africa.

I went to the hfs and went through all the shampoos trying to find sulfate free w/ the least amount of chemicals. When I got home I realized that it has wheat in it, yep, somehow I totally missed that focusing on the sulfates. Geez. I'm going to call the hairdresser today. I hate making calls as there never seems to be a good time but I've got to find something. I tried the tresemme yesterday w/ the la looks gel. My hair is crunchy and my curls certainly not as pretty as when the hairdresser did it.

I read that some people's hair really does well with protein. Wheat protein happens to be really cheap so that's why it's in a lot of hair products. There's a gelatin (which is protein) conditioning home recipe on the naturally curly site that some people like. I've also seen home recipes for making flax seed gel and okra gel.

My hair was also really soft and silky with the wheat products, but I didn't like the dizziness, nausea, and headaches I had.

I have to admit that I've been wearing my hair pulled back until I can buy more products to try.

Definitely call, but are you opposed to just ordering products from Amazon? I think I read somewhere that gels high in alcohol make your hair crunchy. Maybe ask women here what they like on their hair.

What specific Dr. Bronners product do you ladies use? Thanks!

I use the liquid Magic Soap. I prefer the peppermint scent. I cut it 1:1 with water for use as shampoo and body wash, 1:4 with water in a foaming dispenser for hand wash, and 1:1 with baking soda for a soft scrub solution for cleaning/degreasing the stovetop.

I'm going on 6 weeks now using the CG method. I am really in need of a Deva cut but the closest is over an hour away from me. My hair is still pretty short at the moment due to the big chop I did when I first started CG. In 6 weeks I am shocked at how soft my hair has become and how I never have any frizz. I have been using the following products:

As I Am Co-wash

Cure Care conditioner

Shea Moisture deep conditioning mask once a week. (This stuff is awesome!)

After I wash and condition I use Catwalk Curl Amplifier. (This does have a C-Cone in it, but it's the water soluable kind.) I scrunch out my hair to get excess water out and then I use the Deva Curl light ANgel. LOVE this stuff! I scrunch my hair again and then try not to touch it til it's dry. Then I scrunch out the crunch (not much but a little) and I'm good to go.

I also have the Deva Curl no-poo and conditioner and I alternate with the Cure Care and As I Am. I was able to buy the Cure Care by the gallon at Sallys for about $8.

I still didn't call, I don't know why I'm such a spaz. My hair looks awful. I'm not opposed to ordering on Amazon. I just thought it would be good to see if she has rec's since she is a professional and is familiar w/ my hair. I read all the different descriptions and I just don't know. She told me my hair is fine and I never knew that. I just happen to have a lot of it. I am thinking I need something like deva w/ protein as that worked so well, my hair was so pretty. I sure miss my hair just being wavy, it was so much easier then.

I just wanted to post that yesterday I went to CVS (I had a 25% off coupon) and I bought Shea Moisture Curl Milk. It has silk protein in it so I hope it makes my hair nice and soft. I didn't buy any shampoo but I should have since I had the coupon. Anyway, I read most of the labels for the Shea Moisture line. All but one item were gluten free. What I love is that it actually says gluten free plain and clear on the label. If it doesn't have the gluten free listed then it isn't. I saw a bottle of this and really wanted to buy it but it has gluten in it. The Curl Milk I bought says it's for thick hair, but on the curly hair forum people with thin/fine hair say they love it. Anyway, this brand "Shea Moisture" is pretty widely used and liked on the curly hair forum so I thought I'd give it a go.

Oh Dawn, I saw Shea Moisture has an African Black Soap products.

This - the Shea Moisture products will state whether they are gluten-free.  FWIW, from what I can tell, the curl milk and the curl shampoo have protein while the "restorative" shampoo and conditioner do not, though all four of those are gluten-free.  So far, my hair seems to do better with the non-protein (I still want to buy whatever Shea Moisture products I haven't tried, LOL, though I don't care for the curl gel, forgot what it's called).

I am still new to CG ways and still experimenting with products.  I had my first CG cut a few weeks ago and love it.  It seems to take forever to find the right combination for my hair but I'm getting there.  At the moment, what seems to be the optimal routine for me goes like this:

- wash with Tresemme Naturals moisture conditioner

- condition with Shea Moisture Restorative conditioner, leaving quite a bit in

- while soaking wet, scrunch in Deva light defining (angel) gel, first with bare hands and then finally with a t-shirt

- use a couple sprays of Shea Moisture Restorative spray on my palms and then spread on my hair and re-scrunch for just a moment

- air dry; then when completely dry, re-scrunch

I alternate so much that it's hard to be sure, LOL.  When I use a shampoo (the Shea Moisture ones) I also use an apple cider vinegar rinse.

I've seen Shea Moisture lots of places.  Walgreens seems to have a bigger selection than Target or Walmart.  One of my Targets has the Shea Moisture color products which tempt me (my regular color stylist is inconsistent and certainly doesn't know anything about curly hair, though I'm petrified of trying to do my own color)

I don't care for the Deva conditioner, though I've only tried the regular One Condition and not the one for damaged hair.

I have the Shea Moisture Deep conditioner that I use once a week. At first I didn't like it because it didn't make my hair feel soft in the shower. But I was keeping a hair diary and I noticed that my best hair days were always on Sunday, when I used the SM. I use the word "best" loosely, I have yet to have a really good hair day. I really need a Deva Cut, but I want to wait til my hair is a bit longer.
