Karen in CO
My 8yo dd ate a strawberry offered by a friend who was eating chips containing wheat and whey. She has had a terrible stomach ache for 2 days now. Is there anything other than time that could help? She is also allergic to dairy and soy along with a few less common things. Thanks
Slipper
If you're not opposed to medication, my daughter takes hyomax after a gluten infraction. It doesn't help with vomiting/diarrhea, but eases stomach cramping/spasms. Otherwise, bland foods until she's better. Sorry :(
Tammyla
Poor kid. I would have suggested yogurt. Can she eat something like pear-sauce with a pro-biotic mixed in.
Mama Geek
Dh takes a benadryl or 2. I don't know why it helps but it does.
TeacherZee
Peppermint tea calms my stomach when I eat things I shouldn't
briansmama
My GF kids take an enzyme with DPP, which was recommended by our ND after exposure: http://www.amazon.com/Vitacost-Gluten-Enzyme-BioCore-DPP/dp/B0046HKKM6
Lisa in Jax
I agree with Briansmama -- DPP enzymes can help -- especially if given near the time the food was eaten. Since it's been a couple of days since the food was eaten, consider activated charcoal and probiotics several times a day.
Mom-ninja.
Mostly it's a waiting game. I try to up my fiber and water to get the gluten flushed out of my system as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, for a celiac it's not just having the gluten in the body that matters. It's getting through the weeks of the immune system attacking the body due to be triggered by gluten. There's nothing to stop that. So even after all gluten is gone a celiac will still be sick because the body is under attack from itself. Hope she feels better soon. Karen in CO
Thanks. I just hope she recovers faster this time. Last time, she lost 6 lbs from her tiny, almost-fifty-pound self which took months to put back on.
Slartibartfast
If she doesn't have issues with ragweed some chamomile tea would be soothing. Nothing can really stop the reaction :( I would probably do some probiotics to help keep her stomach in balance.
Dahliarw
My GF kids take an enzyme with DPP, which was recommended by our ND after exposure: http://www.amazon.co...P/dp/B0046HKKM6 Just a heads up (I'm not celiac, but I'm sensitive to gluten and avoid it), I took this particular brand of enzymes and it made me so so so so sick. I thought maybe it was just the gluten reaction, so I took the enzyme when I had not had gluten to see where the reaction was coming from, same thing. Nauseous, bowel issues, etc. Just not pretty. I don't know if it was the brand or if I got a bad batch or what. I haven't been brave enough to try another brand, yet.
Mom-ninja.
Thanks. I just hope she recovers faster this time. Last time, she lost 6 lbs from her tiny, almost-fifty-pound self which took months to put back on. When my 12 yr old was down to 52 lbs his doctor gave him a calorie supplement. You get it from the pharmacy. Sometimes they have it in stock and sometimes you have to order it. My pharmacy wanted a doctor's prescription to order it, however, it's technically not a prescription according to my health insurance so they didn't cover it. :glare: It's called Duocal. It cost $37 for a can which lasted about 3 weeks depending how much you take. I don't have a can here anymore to read the ingredients. I do remember it has corn starch and coconut in it. You can look it up online and see what else is in it. She may or may not be able to take it due to her other allergies. Just a thought as it was successful getting my ds to gain 15 lbs in 3 months. That and protein powder every day as well. Oh, and up her carbs. Carbs equals weight gain.
