Kalmia
I just wanted to share this music appreciation program that has been going swimmingly for my logic stage child (and could be easily used for a musically-inclined grammar stage student) and has saved this non-musical mother a lot of stress. Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts It is free on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=leonard+bernstein+young+people%27s+concerts&oq=LEonard+Bernstein&gs_l=youtube.1.3.0l10.508.3588.0.5257.17.9.0.8.8.0.104.585.8j1.9.0...0.0...1ac.1.bvurC1tYUeY Or you can buy it on DVD at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Leonard-Bernstein-Peoples-Concerts-Philharmonic/dp/B0002S641O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361733721&sr=8-1&keywords=Leonard+Bernstein+young Included are 25 lectures/concerts that were produced from 1958-1973. It is like a teaching company course for younger children only with a live orchestra to demonstrate the concepts. Leonard Bernstein is a wonderful teacher. Be aware that the videos are in black and white and there are non-pc terms such as "primitive music." The videos are a product of their times, after all. So if you are looking for a music appreciation course that is "hit play and go," this is something to consider. These are the topics covered in order. This list may help you find and organize them on YouTube. What does music mean? What is American Music? What is Orchestration? What Makes Music Symphonic? What is Classical Music? Humor in Music. What is a Concerto? Who is Gustav Mahler? Folk Music in the Concert Hall What is Impressionism? Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky What is a Melody? The Latin American Spirit Jazz in the Concert Hall What is Sonata Form? A Tribute to Sibelius Musical Atoms: A Study of Intervals The Sound of an Orchestra A Birthday Tribute to Shostakovich What is a Mode? A Toast to Vienna in 3/4 time Quiz-Concert: How Musical are You Berlioz Takes a Trip Two Ballet Birds Fidelio: A Celebration of Life

Mrs Twain
Thank you very much for posting this. I watched the first Youtube episode with my kids today. I think it will be a great resource. I have been trying to find resources like this for a long time, and I think this is one of the most helpful and easiest to use.
momto2Cs
Netflix has this too - or did back when we had Netflix. They do have it on disc, 9 discs in all. I'm definitely looking this up on youtube when I get home - looks exactly like what I have been searching for--thanks!
Penguin
Thank you thank you... I had read about this somewhere and then forgotten about it. And I am very glad to discover that it is on YouTube. Being outside of the U.S., many of the Netflix gems are unavailable to us! And I will also add that we recently watched Fantasia - another very easy way to get some music appreciation worked in :)
