momtolgd
This is for ages 8 and 6. I'm not sure if D'aulaire's would be too old for my 6yo since it's recommended for grades 3-6? Would the Usborne be too young for my 8yo? I know I'll want D'aulaire's book in a few years anyway, but I don't want it to be over the head of my dd this year. Which would you buy? :confused1:
King Alfred Academy
D'aulaire's....Hands down!!! My boys (then 4&6) received it for Christmas from a friend and my oldest has read it, cover to cover, several times. He could tell you about any of the myths and gods. We really like the illustrations too.
Jennefer@SSA
Last year when I asked the same question I was advised to wait and use D'Aulaire's when my boys were older. I purchased Usborne and we loved, loved, loved it. It probably isn't the classic that D'Aulaire's is but it is much easier for younger ones to enjoy as a first taste of mythology! MandJsMama
I looked at both for my 6 year old but decided on the Usborne because my son is very, very sensitive to images of violence. D'Aulaire's seemed to be too much for him so we'll hold off on that.
Lydia
Have you had a chance to look at both of them (from a library, perhaps)? I think that way you will get a better sense for which would be best for your particular children. Mine loved D'Aulaire's - I think we got it when they were 6 or 7. But as other posts show, it depends on the individual child. Best wishes, Lydia
ElisabethGrace
D'Aulaire readers here too! Mine love it at those ages & hopefully the younger ones will too someday. The Usborne one does look nice though. I would try to look at both of them before deciding. HTH!:001_smile:
momtolgd
Hmm, maybe I'll have to buy both! I just checked and our library system has the Usborne one but not the D'Aulaire one. Maybe I will check out the Usborne one, but that still wouldn't show me the difference. Thanks.
TracyR
Don't feel bad. We have the Usborne book and my 8 almost 9yr old loves this book and I don't think its babyish in the least. But I've read good things about the D'Aulaire so we'll be getting that one as well.

laylamcb
My dd (nearly 6) loves D'Aulaire's. You can "search inside" the book at Amazon here: http://tinyurl.com/6cuso6
kokotg
I usually like Usborne stuff, but I found the Greek Myths book very poorly written. That said, my kids liked it. They wouldn't have followed D'Aulaire's at the time, I don't think, but they were younger than yours.
Susie in CA
We have both! My dss love the Usborne Greek Myths. I am keeping the other one for Logic Stage. Susie
Jennefer@SSA
I am glad gardenschooler mentioned Aliki's Gods and Goddesses of Olympus. Ds loved that one as well! :)
momtolgd
Thanks everyone. I decided to go ahead and get both (there is a mini version of the Usborne one that is less than $6 at rainbow resource center). I also decided to go ahead and buy Aliki's Gods and Goddesses of Olympus as well. I'm so excited about doing Ancients this year! :D
