Quiver0f10
I took stew meat out Friday to thaw. It has been in the Fridge since and when I took it out just now to make stew, some of the pieces on top have turned brown. It smells good and it's not slimy etc., but I have no idea if this is normal. Toss or is it still good?
PachiSusan
I err on the side of extreme caution. I personally would not eat it.
regentrude
This Friday, as in day before yesterday? Sure, I'd eat it if it will be cooked. I would not eat it raw, though. Meat you buy in the store can be sold for several days if refrigerated
Laura Corin
Brown is normal - it just means that the meat has been in contact with the air. If it's been in the fridge since Friday (and wasn't out of date when you froze it) I would use it. Laura
Quiver0f10
ok, thank you all. Yes, this Friday as in two days ago.
Dandelion
Did you put it in the fridge frozen and let it thaw in the fridge since Friday? If yes, it's definitely fine. Or, did you thaw it outside of the fridge and then put it in the fridge once it thawed? That would be more iffy for me, but given that it looks and smells fine, I'd probably still use it. Just cook it a bit longer at a fairly high temp if that makes you feel better - that should kill anything questionable. ;)
atozmom
As long as it thawed in the fridge the whole time, and doesn't smell bad, I would cook it and eat it.
PachiSusan
Where were you gals when I threw away tons of meat? LOL I always thought as soon as brown appeared it was bye bye meat!!
Harriet Vane
If it has been continually refrigerated, then yes, it's fine. All meat discolors over time.
Parrothead
Oh, yeah. Sure I'd cook it if I was still a meat eater.
caroljenn
I think I've heard that the brown has something to do with the meat meeting the oxygen in the air. Friday's meat will be completely fine if it's been in the fridge. I wouldn't eat it without it being cooked well, but I don't eat meat that's not cooked anyway!
